How do we reconcile the darkness that is known for the believer from the departure of his soul and the pleasant breeze accompanying it, and so on, with the fact that his grave is expanded for him?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : How do we reconcile the darkness that is known for the believer from the departure of his soul and the pleasant breeze accompanying it, and so on, with the fact that his grave is expanded for him, and then that he is punished in the grave for some of his actions? Or is that darkness only for the believer whose all sins are forgiven?

The Shaykh : There is no combining of the two opposites mentioned in the question in the hadiths: that on the one hand, his soul departs accompanied by a pleasant breeze and wrapped in soft silk, as mentioned in some authentic hadiths, and yet at the same time he is punished. There is no such combining of opposites in the hadiths. The one who is punished—like what came in the two previous hadiths:
Beware of (smearing yourselves with) urine, because it is the main cause of punishment in the grave استنزهوا من البول ؛ فإن عامة عذاب القبر منه
Bulugh al-Maram 103
—there is no report in his case that his soul is wrapped in silk. It appears that combining the two opposites is not the reality. And this, without doubt—as is not hidden from everyone—is among the matters of the unseen to which we referred yesterday on the occasion of mentioning:
When the deceased is placed in his grave and the people turn away from him, he hears the striking of their sandals. إذا وضع الميت في قبره ، وانصرف الناس عنه مدبرين ؛ فإنه يسمع قرع نعالهم
; we said: it is not permissible to expand upon matters of the unseen, nor to use theoretical analogies; because this is a matter related to faith only, not to legal rulings. Therefore, we do not find in the Sunnah the combining of these two opposites.
Yes.
