The questioner : The du'a of qunut. Some Muslims recite this du'a in the Fajr prayer, and some in the witr prayer; what is established regarding this in the Prophetic Sunnah? May Allah reward you with good.
The Shaykh : The du'a was not mentioned, and by that he means: "O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided." This du'a is not established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) except in the witr prayer, in that hadith in which he taught it to al-Hasan ibn 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). As for reciting qunut with it in the Fajr prayer, it has no basis from two aspects:
First: Reciting qunut in the Fajr prayer continuously throughout the year; this has no basis in the Sunnah.
And from the other aspect: Adhering to qunut in the Fajr prayer, in addition to the fact that continuous qunut is not established in the Sunnah, adhering to this du'a which the Messenger (peace be upon him) commanded to be recited in the qunut of the witr prayer, adhering to this in the qunut of the Fajr prayer is another deviation. Therefore, qunut in the Fajr prayer is not prescribed on a continuous basis. Rather, one supplicates and performs qunut in it, just as one performs qunut in the other five prayers for a calamity that befalls the Muslims. As for qunut with this du'a in the Fajr prayer, it has no basis whatsoever.
