The questioner : The supplication of Qunut: Some Muslims recite this supplication in the Fajr prayer, and some in the Witr prayer. What is established regarding this in the Prophetic Sunnah? May Allah reward you with good?

The Shaykh : The supplication was not mentioned, meaning "O Allah, guide me among those whom You have guided". This supplication is not established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) except in the Witr prayer, in that hadith in which he taught it to al-Hasan ibn 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). As for reciting this Qunut in the Fajr prayer, it has no basis from two aspects. First, continuous Qunut in the Fajr prayer on every day of the year has no basis in the Sunnah. Second, adhering to Qunut in the Fajr prayer, in addition to the fact that continuous Qunut is not established in the Sunnah, entails adhering to this specific supplication which the Messenger (peace be upon him) commanded to be recited in the Qunut of Witr. Adhering to this in the Qunut of Fajr is another deviation. Therefore, continuous Qunut in the Fajr prayer is not prescribed. Rather, one should supplicate and perform Qunut in it as one does in the other five prayers when a calamity befalls the Muslims. As for Qunut with this specific supplication in the Fajr prayer, it has no basis whatsoever.
