The questioner : Many of the sick people perform their prayer on their beds, where they are unable to move, and without ritual purity, and some of them do not face the qiblah. What is the ruling on the prayer of these sick people?
The Shaykh : We should know the general rule in the Shari'ah, indicated by the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), which is that the Muslim must fear Allah the Exalted as much as he is able. Every obligatory duty is required of him, but only to the extent of his ability. If he is unable to fulfill it, it is dropped from him. Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, said:[At-Taghabun 64:16].
The questioner : Yes.
The Shaykh : And He, the Exalted, said:[Al-A'raf 7:42] And He, Glorified and Exalted is He, said: [Al-Baqarah 2:286] And He, the Exalted, said: [Al-Mu'minun 23:60-62].
And in the authentic hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said:Sahih al-Bukhari 7288.
The questioner : Yes.
The Shaykh : So these sick people you referred to, who pray on their beds, in impure clothes, and not facing the qiblah, all of them, if they have done what they are able to do of the obligatory duties in their prayer, then they are excused for what they were unable to do.
The questioner : Praise be to Allah.
The Shaykh : They are not obligated to do it, and they are not sinful for leaving it.
The questioner : Yes.
The Shaykh : Yes.
The questioner : May Allah reward you.

But those who believed and did righteous deeds - We charge no soul except [within] its capacity. Those are the companions of Paradise; they will abide therein eternally.

لا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا(60) And they who give what they give while their hearts are fearful because they will be returning to their Lord - (61) It is those who hasten to good deeds, and they outstrip [others] therein. (62) And We charge no soul except [with that within] its capacity, and with Us is a record which speaks with truth; and they will not be wronged.
And in the authentic hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said:
