"The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade shaving the head except after a long interval."

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbids us from... shaving the head except after a long interval?

The Shaykh : Except after a long interval.

The questioner : Except after a long interval.

The Shaykh : Yes, what we have reached is that it is a valid hadith, and its meaning is clear; because it is part of the complete hadith which says: "He forbade us from much of luxury," which is indulgence and a person's concern with the grooming of his body and his clothes. So, although a person is obligated to display the effects of Allah's blessing upon His servant, on the other hand, he should not pay too much attention to improving his appearance; because this indicates some exaggeration in indulgence, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) used to say:
Beware of indulgence; for the servants of Allah are not those who indulge.
.
Beware of me and luxury.
Meaning: Beware of exaggeration in indulgence;
For the servants of Allah are not those who indulge.
. As for His saying (Blessed and Exalted is He):
Say, "Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has produced for His servants and the good [lawful] things of provision?" Say, "They are for those who believe during the worldly life [but] exclusively for them on the Day of Resurrection."
[Al-A'raf 7:32]
, this verse does not contradict the aforementioned hadith; rather, the verse is explained by the hadith, as is the rule. Our Lord has not forbidden His servants the permissible blessings within the limits of the explanatory Sunnah. Among this is that He forbade exaggeration in indulgence, as in this hadith. And when he (peace be upon him) said, on the occasion of the hadith—which is known to you, if Allah wills—when he said:
He who has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of pride shall not enter Paradise.
Sahih Muslim 91c
. They said: O Messenger of Allah, one of us loves to have good clothes seen on him; is that from arrogance? He said:
No. لا
. Then the second and third mentioned the sandal and mentioned the garment, and every time he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No, no, that is not from arrogance. Then he (peace be upon him) said:
Verily, Allah is Graceful and He loves Grace. Pride is disdaining the truth (out of self-conceit) and contempt for the people.
Sahih Muslim 91a
. This is the arrogance in which, if a person has even a speck of it, he will not enter Paradise, as he (peace be upon him) said. So this shaving that is forbidden is from the category of... indulgence, and... enjoyment, and there is no disagreement in that.
