The Shaykh : All praise is due to Allah; we praise Him, seek His help, and seek His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our own souls and from the evil of our deeds. Whoever Allah guides, no one can mislead, and whoever He leaves to stray, no one can guide. I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger. As for what follows:
The best of speech is the speech of Allah, the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and the worst of matters are their innovations. Every innovation is a religious innovation, every religious innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire.
We are still in the chapter: "Whoever visits a people or eats with them." We had read the first and second hadiths from this chapter. Today’s hadith is narrated by the author with his authentic chain, from Abdullah ibn Umar:
'Umar found a silk robe and brought it to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said, 'Buy this and wear it on Jumu'ah and when delegations come to you.' The Prophet, peace be upon him, replied, 'Only someone who has no portion in the Next World wears this.'
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 349
. The continuation of the hadith is:
Then the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was brought some robes and sent one robe to 'Umar, one to Usama, and one to 'Ali. 'Umar said, 'Messenger of Allah! You have sent this to me when I heard you say what you said about it.' The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'You can sell it or take care of your needs with it.'
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 349
: This hadith contains two issues. The first issue concerns the relationship between the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and Umar, where Umar saw a silk garment being sold in the market. I may have mentioned in the previous lesson that a "hullah" consists of two garments, or in modern terms: a suit. So Umar brought it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and offered to buy this garment to adorn himself with it and wear it on Friday or when receiving delegations coming to him. The Messenger (may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him) excused himself from buying it by saying:
This is worn by the one who will have no share in the Hereafter.
Sahih al-Bukhari 2612
"No share in the Hereafter" means: no portion, no lot in the Hereafter. This requires some clarification, because the apparent meaning of the hadith is: "No lot in the Hereafter" means he does not enter Paradise. The man who wears silk has no share in the Hereafter, meaning: he does not enter Paradise. So what is the meaning of the hadith, and is it to be taken at its apparent meaning, or does it have another meaning? The answer: There are hadiths more explicit than this hadith in denying a Muslim’s entry into Paradise for committing a certain sin. For example, his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
The jealous man does not enter Paradise.
,
"No one who is undutiful to his parents enters Paradise."
Musannaf Abd al-Razzaq 17:2828
,
The beater of false tales would never enter heaven.
Sahih Muslim 105b
, meaning a talebearer, and I think this hadith has passed us by. There are many and numerous hadiths in this vein. We had mentioned in a past lesson the interpretation or the scholars’ statements in explaining such hadiths:
The beater of false tales would never enter heaven.
Sahih Muslim 105b
, a talebearer, to the end of the examples we mentioned. Does that mean he committed disbelief with this act? Did he leave the religion because of this sin so that he does not enter Paradise? We had mentioned that the meaning of this hadith and its like:
The beater of false tales would never enter heaven.
Sahih Muslim 105b
, a talebearer, and others, has many interpretations. The first interpretation: He does not enter Paradise at all if he considers this sin permissible in his heart. He does not enter Paradise, a talebearer, at all if he considers this sin permissible in his heart, not just in his action. That is, he says, as many people today say, who also have no share, he tells you: "No halal, no haram, from today until the Day of Judgment is open." This means he is a man who neither declares things lawful nor unlawful. So whoever commits a sin, whatever the nature of that sin, without caring about committing it, without feeling in his heart that he is a sinner against his Lord, but rather when he commits this sin he has committed it and considered it permissible in his heart, then this person does not enter Paradise at all. This is the first interpretation, and the apparent meaning of the hadith is to be understood according to it. The second interpretation: This type of person does not enter Paradise if he does not consider this sin permissible in his heart; he does not enter Paradise with the foremost of the first. This is the meaning of the hadith: He who backbites people does not enter Paradise. He enters Paradise, but later than the foremost of the first. Why? Because he will be reckoned for his sin. So either Allah forgives him due to the many causes He has prescribed for His servants out of mercy for them, or Allah does not forgive it for him, and he enters the Fire and is punished according to what he deserves of punishment, and then after that he comes out of the Fire and enters Paradise. So any hadith that denies entry into Paradise for a Muslim because of a certain sin must be understood according to one of three meanings: He does not enter Paradise if he did such and such while considering it permissible in his heart. The second meaning: He does not enter Paradise with the foremost of the first, but after a time. The third meaning: He does not enter Paradise except after being punished. This hadith is interpreted according to these three meanings:
This is worn by the one who will have no share in the Hereafter.
Sahih al-Bukhari 2612
: meaning he has no absolute share in Paradise. This is in the first case if he considers wearing silk permissible in his heart and says with his tongue or in his heart only, without his tongue: "No halal, no haram." This person does not enter Paradise at all and does not smell the scent of Paradise. The second meaning:
He has no share
, meaning: He has no share in Paradise with the foremost of the first. The third meaning: He has no share in Paradise except after being punished for his wearing of silk in this world. This is the meaning of the saying of the Messenger (peace be upon him):
This is worn by the one who will have no share in the Hereafter.
Sahih al-Bukhari 2612
