For indeed, the best of speech is the speech of Allah, and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and the worst of matters are their innovations, and every innovation is a religious innovation, and every religious innovation is misguidance.

The Shaykh : As for what follows: For indeed, the best of speech is the speech of Allah, and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and the worst of matters are their innovations, and every innovation is a religious innovation, and every religious innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire. Our previous lesson reached the eighty-ninth hadith after two hundred from Chapter 138, which is the chapter: "Good Character if They Understand." This is the hadith with which we begin our lesson for this day; its chain of narration is good. The author narrates it from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do you know what it is that makes most people enter Hellfire?
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 14:31
. They said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said:
The fear of Allah and good morals (Akhlaq) are the two major characteristics which lead to Paradise.
Bulugh al-Maram 16:97
.
This hadith shows that the Messenger (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him), the gatherer of good and evil, said—asking his companions, for the method of question and answer allows the answer to settle in the hearts of the listeners—he said to his companions:
What most leads people to Hell?
Sunan Ibn Majah 4246Sahih (Darussalam)
. They answered him by saying: "Allah and His Messenger know best." Then he answered them (peace and blessings be upon him) by saying:
The two hollows: the private parts and the mouth.
As for the private parts, it is an euphemism for unlawful sexual intercourse, and that does not require explanation or clarification. As for the mouth, the intended meaning is many matters of disobedience, including backbiting, talebearing, insults and cursing, and speech that a person is not permitted to speak regarding his Lord (Blessed and Exalted is He), such as swearing by other than Allah (Mighty and Majestic). This side of the two mentioned is the more important one, and it is what the Muslim must stop to consider and reflect upon. As for the first side, which is the private parts, its aspect is limited and is guaranteed by most Muslims. As for the other side, which is the mouth, few people are saved from it due to the abundance of disobedience that circulates in the mouth of a person, as we mentioned earlier. Therefore, it came in some authentic hadiths that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever can guarantee (the chastity of) what is between his two jaw-bones and what is between his two legs (i.e. his tongue and his private parts), I guarantee Paradise for him.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6474
. "The two jaws" means the two jawbones, and this is an euphemism for a person to guard his mouth and tongue from descending into what does not please Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) from those disobediences. So he (peace be upon him) says:
Whoever guarantees what is between his two jaws—his two jawbones—and what is between his two thighs, I guarantee for him Paradise.
. Reality bears witness that the most common trial for the Muslim is his tongue, and therefore it was said long ago:
"Guard your tongue, O human being, *** Lest it bite you, for it is a serpent."
The Messenger (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him) mentioned in this hadith the summaries of evil and urged the Muslims to refrain from them, namely guarding the private parts and guarding what emerges from a person from the mouth. Then he mentioned the summaries of good by his saying and his question to them:
The fear of Allah and good morals (Akhlaq) are the two major characteristics which lead to Paradise
Bulugh al-Maram 16:97
. Naturally, their answer was also their previous saying: "Allah and His Messenger know best." Then he answered them (peace and blessings be upon him) by saying:
Taqwa of Allah, and good character.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2004Sahih (Darussalam)
. The point of this hadith in this chapter is the last sentence of it, namely his saying (peace be upon him):
Good Character
. In the last part of the hadith, our Prophet (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him) mentions that the greatest and strongest causes of entering Paradise are two matters. The first matter is the mindfulness of Allah.
