The author (may Allah have mercy on him) says: "Chapter on honoring the elder."

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The author (may Allah have mercy on him) says: "Chapter on honoring the elder." This chapter is similar in meaning to the previous one. He narrated with a good chain of transmission: from al-As'ari, who said:
Part of respect for Allah is to show respect to an old Muslim and to someone who knows the Qur'an, as long as he does not go to excess in it nor turn away from it, and to respect a just ruler.
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 357
.
The chain of transmission of this hadith is good, but here it is mentioned as stopping at al-As'ari, who is Abu Musa al-As'ari, the famous Companion. It also appears in some hadith books as traced back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and it is established as traced back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said in it (peace and blessings be upon him): "Indeed, among the ways of honoring Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and revering Him is honoring the Muslim who has gray hair, meaning the elderly Muslim." This phrase is on the same level as his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) in the previous hadiths in the last lesson:
He is not one of us who does not honor or revere our elder. ليس منَّا من لم يجلَّ أو يوقِّر كبيرنا
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 2:122
, except that the previous hadith carries a meaning that is broader than the hadith of this chapter now. As we discussed, that one includes with the word "our elder": the elder in age, and the elder in knowledge and virtue, as we discussed. But this one is more specific; it is explicit in honoring the elderly man because of his gray hair, because it says:
Glorifying Allah involves showing honour to a grey-haired Muslim إنَّ من إجلال الله إكرامَ ذي الشَّيبة المسلم
Sunan Abi Dawud 4843Hasan (Al-Albani)
