Chapter: "Chapter on Revering the Elder." Explanation of the hadith of Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him): (Indeed, part of revering Allah is honoring the elderly Muslim, the bearer of the Qur'an who neither exaggerates in it nor neglects it, and honoring the just ruler).

The Shaykh : The author (may Allah have mercy on him) says:
"Chapter on Revering the Elder".
This chapter is similar in meaning to the previous chapter.
He narrated with a hasan chain:
From al-Ash'ari, who said:
Part of respect for Allah is to show respect to an old Muslim and to someone who knows the Qur'an, as long as he does not go to excess in it nor turn away from it, and to respect a just ruler. إن من إجلال الله إكرام ذي الشيبة المسلم ، وحامل القرآن غير الغالي فيه ولا الجافي عنه ، وإكرام ذي السُّلطان المقسط
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 357
.
The chain of this hadith is hasan, but here it is mentioned as mawquf (stopping at the Companion) from al-Ash'ari, who is Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, the famous Companion. It also appears in some hadith books as marfu' (traced to the Prophet), and it is established as marfu' to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said in it (peace and blessings be upon him): "Indeed, part of magnifying Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and revering Him is honoring the elderly Muslim, meaning the one of advanced age." This phrase is on the same level as his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) in the previous hadiths in the last lesson:
He is not one of us who does not revere or honor our elder. ليس منا من لم يجلَّ أو يوقر كبيرنا
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 2:122
, except that the previous hadith carries a meaning that is broader than the hadith of this current chapter. As we discussed, that one includes with the word "our elder": the elder in age, the elder in knowledge, and the elder in virtue, as we discussed. But this one is more specific; it is explicit in honoring the elderly man for his gray hair, because it says:
Glorifying Allah involves showing honour to a grey-haired Muslim إن من إجلال الله إكرامَ ذي الشيبة المسلم
Sunan Abi Dawud 4843Hasan (Al-Albani)
.
