The Shaykh: This hadith is like a detail, or a part of a detail, of a hadith that came before, and he made a new chapter for it, saying in the chapter that follows the previous chapter: "The Chapter on Showing Mercy to the Young." He mentioned the aforementioned hadith: from 'Amr ibn Shu'ayb, from his father, from his grandfather, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Anyone who does not show mercy to our children nor acknowledge the right of our old people is not one of us. ليس منَّا من لم يرحَمْ صغيرنا ، ويعرف حقَّ كبيرنا
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 363
. Do you remember? I think this hadith came up with us before, so now it is like a practical translation of the phrase:
He is not one of us who does not have mercy on our young ليس منَّا من لم يرحَمْ صغيرنا
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1919Hasan (Darussalam)
. Among the ways of showing mercy to the young is that this fruit is offered to the small child before the older one, because the small child remains more eager for something new than one who is older than him, so this is among the ways of showing mercy to the young, yes.

The questioner: May we draw an analogy from this if we want to add candies or chocolates for the children present and start with the children?

The Shaykh: No, this is contrary to the Sunnah. Sugar is abundant and plentiful. The Sunnah is the novel and new thing, which is not known except for a month, two months, or three months at most. As for the usual distribution, I think it has passed or will come; I do not know. In explicit hadiths:
The right-hand one, then the right-hand one. الأيمن فالأيمن
There is no organization or arrangement here; rather, this is the aforementioned etiquette regarding new fruit.
And the point is that this second chapter seems to hint and indicate that that etiquette, which began by giving the new fruit to the young, is among what falls under showing mercy to the young, which the Messenger (peace be upon him) encouraged in this hadith:
Anyone who does not show mercy to our children nor acknowledge the right of our old people is not one of us. ليس منَّا من لم يرحَمْ صغيرنا ، ويعرف حقَّ كبيرنا
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 363
