The Shaykh : Now a new chapter, which also clarifies for us a portion of the hadiths we have previously covered in past lessons, from his saying (peace be upon him):
He is not one of us who does not have mercy on our young ليس منَّا من لم يرحَمْ صغيرنا
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1919Hasan (Darussalam)
From this mercy, Imam al-Bukhari was inspired, and he said in the chapter seventy-two after the hundred: "The chapter on wiping the head of a child." Out of affection and love, he narrated with his authentic chain from Yusuf ibn Abdullah ibn Salam, who said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) named me Yusuf, seated me on his lap, and wiped my head."
Regarding Abdullah ibn Salam, there is no doubt among you about his biography; he was one of the great rabbis of the Jews and one of the few who entered Islam, because the Jews are a people of envy, meaning they have stubbornness and arrogance. Therefore, hundreds and thousands entered Islam from the Christians, whereas the Jews entered only as individuals. This is from that small number. Abdullah ibn Salam was among the rabbis and scholars of the Jews. When he met the Messenger (may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him), he believed in him and affirmed his truth. However, with his wisdom and knowledge, he wanted to reveal to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the plot and envy of the Jews. After he embraced Islam,
He said to the Messenger, "Ask them about me, and they will speak well of me. But if you inform them of my Islam, they will immediately turn and speak ill of me." And so the Messenger (peace be upon him) put him in a small room. The Jews entered and he asked them about Abdullah ibn Salam. They said, "He is the best of us, the son of the best of us, our master, and the son of our master." Soon Abdullah came out of the room and said, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that you are Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah." They said, "You are the worst of us, the son of the worst of us."
immediately, Abdullah did this to confirm to the Messenger (peace be upon him) what he knew of the Jews' plot and envy. This Abdullah ibn Salam had a young son named Yusuf. Yusuf speaks about himself, saying that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took him and placed him on his lap because he was small, and named him after one of the prophets, namely Yusuf (peace and blessings be upon him), and also wiped his head. This wiping of the head of the small child, I know it in our land in Albania; it was a common practice, especially from my father (may Allah have mercy on him). He hardly met a small child without extending his hand to his head and asking, "How are you? May Allah bless you. How is your father?" and so on. This is one of the etiquettes of Islam, as you hear, but where is it now? It has absolutely no existence, unfortunately, as a general etiquette. As for with small, close relatives, we still find some mention of it, but even then, within very narrow limits. This hadith has a strong connection, as we mentioned earlier, to his saying (peace be upon him):
He is not one of us who does not have mercy on our young ليس منَّا من لم يرحَمْ صغيرنا
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1919Hasan (Darussalam)
Therefore, it is obligatory for the older man to show affection to the small child and to display his love and gentleness toward him, so that this small child grows up with an affection that inclines him toward the older man, to listen to his words and take his advice. Finally, the author also brought another hadith indicating his etiquette (peace be upon him) with children and young girls. He narrated with his authentic chain from Aisha, who said: "I used to play with dolls in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I had female companions who played with me. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered, they would hide from him, but he would send them to me, and they would play with me."
This hadith requires much commentary, and perhaps the next lesson will be sufficient for it, if Allah wills. This is enough for now.
