Issue: Is supplication made before the closing salam or after it?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : After I complete my prayer, I make supplication: O Allah, forgive me and my parents, O Allah, forgive our parents, O Allah, raise their status...

The Shaykh : When is this? After the salam?

The questioner : After the greeting.

The Shaykh : Do it before the salam.

The questioner : And I am willing, and while I am prostrating I make supplication: O Allah, forgive my mother.

The Shaykh : And before the salam, meaning supplication before the salam is better than after the salam, do you understand? Because the Messenger (peace be upon him) said in the authentic hadith:
When any one of you utters tashahhud (in prayer) he must seek refuge with Allah from four (trials) and should thus say:" O Allah! I seek refuge with Thee from the torment of the Hell, from the torment of the grave, from the trial of life and death and from the evil of the trial of Masih al-Dajjal" (Antichrist).
Sahih Muslim 588a
; before the salam.
Just as prostration is a place where supplication is more likely to be answered than other places, so too is the time before the salam a place where supplication is more likely to be answered than after the salam.
One of the distinguished scholars said: The example of one who makes supplication after the salam and does not make supplication before it is like a person who is prostrate before a noble, generous king, yet instead of asking him while he is prostrate before him, he turns his back and asks him! My brother, do not ask him when you are before him, yes? And this is an example, and to Allah belongs the highest example. So you are in prayer facing Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) with your whole being, with your heart, you have praised Him, you have recited the Qur'an, you have glorified Him, you have said Allahu Akbar, and so on. So now you are psychologically prepared to turn to Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) with your request; this is its place, not after you have departed from the prayer. And therefore it came in the Noble Qur'an regarding the day of the Friday prayer:
And when the prayer has been concluded, disperse within the land and seek from the bounty of Allah فَإِذَا قُضِيَتِ الصَّلَاةُ فَانْتَشِرُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَابْتَغُوا مِنْ فَضْلِ اللَّهِ
[Al-Jumu'ah 62:10]
,
When the prayer has been completed فَإِذَا قُضِيَتِ الصَّلَاةُ
meaning it has ended and you are walking away; because the spiritual, moral connection that existed between you and your Lord, merely by your exiting the prayer, has ended. You need to resume a new spiritual life now. Bring forth the spirituality that you were living while in your prayer to be renewed with you anew after the salam; this is far away. And therefore it is preferred that the Muslim's supplication for anything of the matters of this world and the Hereafter be either in prostration or before the salam. And therefore he (peace be upon him) said in the prayer:
Its opening is the takbir, and its closing is the taslim. افتتاحها التكبير ، وتحليلها التسليم
; the release means exiting the prayer is the salam. So the prescribed thing is that you make supplication, as we said, either while you are prostrating or while you are in the tashahhud before you finish the prayer with the salam.
Is it clear?

The questioner : Is that clear?
