The Shaykh : O my Muslim brother, do you know what the meaning of hoarding gold and silver is? Does hoarding gold and silver mean that a person buries them in the ground? No. Allah the Exalted explained the hoarding of gold and silver in His saying: [At-Tawbah 9:34] This is the hoarding: not spending it in the way of Allah, meaning in His Shari'ah, in which Allah has made it obligatory for you to spend. The most important thing in which wealth is spent is zakah. So, the meaning of hoarding is withholding what is obligatory to be given from one's wealth. The meaning of hoarding is withholding what is obligatory to be given from one's wealth. This is the hoarding, even if this wealth is on top of a mountain, visible and apparent, but what is obligatory in it is not paid, then it is hoarding. And if a person pays what is obligatory in his wealth, it is not hoarding, even if he buries it under layers of earth. Their foreheads, their sides, and their backs will be branded with it. How many directions does a person have? How many directions? Four: the front, the back, the right, and the left. From the front, the foreheads are branded; from the back, the backs; and from the right and left, the sides. I seek refuge in Allah. And their sides. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) interpreted this verse by saying: Sahih Muslim 987a O my Muslim brother, they will be heated in the Fire of Hell. What is the measure of the heat of the Fire of Hell? What is its measure? It exceeds the fire of this world by sixty-nine parts. All the fire of this world, however great it may be, the Fire of Hell exceeds it by sixty-nine parts. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sunan Ibn Majah 677Sahih (Darussalam) And this great sun, whose heat is from the breath of Hell. The scholars have mentioned that its heat is unbearable, and if the greatest steel on the face of the earth were brought near it, this steel would fly away as smoke flies away, due to the intensity of the sun's heat. This is a reality, for between us and the sun are these great distances, and yet its heat reaches you to the extent that you feel it on summer days. So, we cannot grasp the reality of the heat of the Fire, but what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned is by way of approximation: it exceeds all the fire of this world by sixty-nine parts. Sheets of this gold and silver are made into plates of gold and silver, not from fire, but from fire. So it is fire heated in fire, I seek refuge in Allah. His side, his forehead, and his back are branded with it for a minute or a moment. Is the hadith authentic? He is branded on his side, his forehead, and his back for a moment, one moment. No, any moment in a day whose measure is fifty thousand years. And yet, are these plates left to cool and weaken? No. Whenever they cool, they are returned. From the moment there is coolness in them, they are returned, I seek refuge in Allah, to the Fire of Hell until their heat returns as it was, and then the branding is repeated with them. I believe that every believer who believes in what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us of cannot be stingy with zakah, no matter how much it is or how much it increases, even if it were a million to forty million. What is the zakah of forty million? How many million riyals? But when he comes out to pay it and looks at it, a million, he starts calculating. A million riyals, he paid this out, that is a lot. "Go back, boy," he puts it back in the box. Then his religion overcomes him. He comes out to pay the zakah, opens the box, and takes it out. If it feels heavy in his hand, he says, "A million is a lot." "Go back, boy," and so on. But the believer does not care, by Allah, about wealth. If a million is taken from him, thirty-nine million remain. Did he obtain these thirty-nine million through his cleverness, his cunning, or through the decree and provision of Allah? Through the decree and provision of Allah. [An-Nahl 16:78] How can you be stingy, O my brother, with yourself regarding something that Allah gave you, which is much, and He asked you for a little? And we heard in the Fajr prayer today: [Muhammad 47:38].
