Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : So let us begin with the first verse that has come to us in what we wish to discuss from the verses of zakah, which is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And those who hoard gold and silver and spend it not in the way of Allah - give them tidings of a painful punishment. (35) The Day when it will be heated in the fire of Hell and seared therewith will be their foreheads, their flanks, and their backs, [it will be said], "This is what you hoarded for yourselves, so taste what you used to hoard."
[At-Tawbah 9:34-35]
. Repeat the verse.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : Listen, listen, my brother.
those who hoard gold and silver الذين يكنزون الذهب والفضة
[At-Tawbah 9:34]
What is the meaning of hoarding gold and silver? Is it intended that they bury it in the ground? No, the meaning of "they hoard gold and silver" is that they do not pay its zakah, even if it were on the tops of mountains and they do not pay its zakah, then they are hoarding it. And whoever pays its zakah, even if it were in the bottom of the earth, he has not hoarded it. So the meaning of "they hoard gold and silver" is what? It is that they withhold its zakah and do not give it out.
give them tidings of a painful punishment. فبشرهم بعذاب أليم
[Ali 'Imran 3:21]
To whom is the address in His saying:
So give them tidings فبشرهم
Is it to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) or to every person who knows their condition? The second answer is more general, meaning: Give them tidings, O you who know their condition, that they have a painful punishment. When is this punishment? — O son, pay attention — When is this punishment?
The Day when it will be heated in the fire of Hell يوم يحمى عليها في نار جهنم
[At-Tawbah 9:35]
It will be heated, on what? On the gold and silver in the Fire of Hell. And the Fire of Hell, O brothers, is superior to all the fires of this world by sixty-nine parts, meaning that its heat is seventy parts compared to the heat of what? All of this world, the heat of gas, wood, electricity, and everything. The fire of the Fire of Hell is more intense than it by sixty-nine parts, superior to it along with the original part, making it seventy parts. I seek refuge in Allah from the Fire, I seek refuge in Allah from the Fire, we seek refuge in Allah from the Fire.
