The questioner : Another man says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up one night reciting a verse repeatedly until dawn, and it was:
If You should punish them - indeed they are Your servants; but if You forgive them - indeed it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
[Al-Ma'idah 5:118]
. He bowed with it, prostrated with it, and supplicated with it. What does it mean that he bowed with it and prostrated with it? Does he recite it in the bowing and prostration? Is reciting the Qur’an in the bowing and prostration forbidden?

The Shaykh : Yes, that is the meaning. And as the scholars of usul al-fiqh say, “Every rule has exceptions,” and this is one of them. This is an exception to the prohibition of reciting the Qur’an in the bowing and prostration; that is, it was a specific state in which he (peace and blessings be upon him) was bowing and prostrating with it that night. Naturally, this was after he had performed the prescribed and customary tasbih, which is necessary.
...

The questioner : Does this mean it was a specific privilege for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)?

The Shaykh: Yes.
