The questioner : Another question: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spent a night repeating a verse until dawn, and it is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
If You should punish them - indeed they are Your servants; but if You forgive them - indeed it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. إن تعذبهم فإنهم عبادكم وإن تغفر لهم فإنك أنت العزيز الحكيم
[Al-Ma'idah 5:118]
, he bowed with it, prostrated with it, and supplicated with it. What is the meaning of “he bowed with it and prostrated with it”? Does it mean he recited it during the bowing and prostration? And is reciting the Qur'an during the bowing and prostration forbidden?

The Shaykh : Yes, that is the meaning. And as the scholars of usul al-fiqh (the principles of jurisprudence) say: every rule has exceptions, and this is one of them. This is an exception to the prohibition of reciting the Qur'an during the bowing and prostration. It means a special state in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was bowing and prostrating with it that night, of course, after performing the prescribed and customary tasbih (glorification of Allah) which is obligatory.

The questioner : Does this mean it is a special privilege for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)?

The Shaykh : Yes, exactly.
