The imam read the prostration verse and bowed instead of prostrating, and some of the congregation bowed while some prostrated; what is required of them?

The questioner : A man prayed Maghrib with a surah that ends with a prostration.

The Shaykh : What?

The questioner : With a surah containing a prostration of recitation.

The Shaykh : Close to this.

The questioner : A person prayed Maghrib with a surah that ends with a prostration.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : Instead of prostrating, he bowed. Some of the congregation prostrated and some bowed. What should those who prostrated do?

The Shaykh : Those who prostrated, if they realize that he is bowing, they should rise from their prostration and bow with him. If they do not realize until after he has said, “Allah hears the one who praises Him,” they should also rise and bow, then follow him. This is the rule: if a follower lags behind the imam by a pillar or more due to an excuse, he should perform it and catch up with his imam.

The questioner : Is ... the prostration for forgetfulness?

The Shaykh : They must perform the prostration for forgetfulness if they missed something of the prayer. If they did not miss anything of the prayer, they owe nothing, because the imam bears the responsibility for them.
