about an absolute vow that was not specified.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Regarding the vow; if a person says, for example, "I have a vow for the sake of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He)," but he did not specify what he will do with it, what is the action regarding it?

The Shaykh : Do you mean by your saying "he did not specify" that he will eat from it or not?

The questioner : Yes, he made the vow without any specification at all; he just made the vow.

The Shaykh : An absolute vow gives the one who made it no right to it; that is, he does not eat from it, but rather he gives it to the poor and the needy. Therefore, the one who makes a vow and wants to take a share from it must intend this when he makes his vow; do you understand how? But if he did not make the vow = -- and peace be upon you -- = it goes to the poor and the needy.

The questioner : This is for him personally; but what about his brothers, his mother, and his father, his family in this situation?

The Shaykh : For the poor... but if they are wealthy and he did not intend them.

Another questioner : Even if it is absolute?

The Shaykh : We are speaking now about the absolute vow. If the vow is made absolute and not restricted, it goes to the poor and the needy. So when he says, "even if they are his relatives, his brothers" = -- welcome, how are you -- = when he restricted it in his question to his brothers or relatives, if they are poor, they are included in the previous answer. If they are wealthy, he must have restricted it when he made the vow; is that clear?

The questioner : Is that clear?

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah.

The questioner : May Allah reward you all with the best of good.
