A Word on the Method of Acquiring Sacred Knowledge.
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The questioner and the one asked should benefit from the questions that come to us, so that we may clarify what knowledge we have regarding them. Before that, I see that I should deliver a brief word about knowledge and the method of acquiring it, based on a verse in the Noble Qur'an that we have always read and recited in the hours of the night and the edges of the day, but most people do not pay attention to the knowledge contained in it. That is His saying—Blessed and Exalted is He: [An-Nahl 16:43]. So Allah—Mighty and Majestic—addressed this noble verse to the entire Muslim community, its scholars and its ignorant, its educated and its unlettered.
-- The questioner : ... .
The Shaykh : That is your concern, not mine. As for me, I have no voice except what you hear.
This verse:[An-Nahl 16:43] is an address to the entire community, as we said, its scholars and its ignorant. So our Lord—Mighty and Majestic—divided the community in this verse into two groups: a group upon whom it is obligatory to ask, and a group upon whom it is obligatory that when they are asked, they answer. These are the people of knowledge, and those are the non-scholars. [An-Nahl 16:43]. The people of dhikr are the people of the Qur'an, because the dhikr intended here is the Noble Qur'an, as evidenced by the saying of our Lord, Lord of the Worlds: [An-Nahl 16:44]. So the dhikr here is the dhikr there, [An-Nahl 16:44] meaning: the Qur'an [An-Nahl 16:44]. And the people of dhikr, the people of the Qur'an, are, as he—peace and blessings be upon him—said: Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 19:26. Our Prophet—may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him—did not mean by this hadith that the people of the Qur'an are those who memorize the Qur'an and perfect its recitation with the correct articulation of its letters and sounds, and recite it with good tajwid, even if they do not exaggerate in that as some reciters do. Rather, the intended meaning of the people of dhikr, the people of the Qur'an, are those who, above all else, understand the Noble Qur'an with a correct understanding, and then they act upon it. These are the people of knowledge, they are the people of dhikr... like the Muslims, and it is he who represents the second and larger group, that they direct their questions to these... people of dhikr, who are the people of the Qur'an and the people of Allah and His special ones.
So, our Lord—Mighty and Majestic—has indicated in this verse that one of the methods of learning is asking. One of the methods of learning is for a person to ask about what matters to him from the affairs of his religion, and not remain ignorant throughout his life. Rather, he should hasten to apply this verse:[An-Nahl 16:43].
And this topic, in reality, we have covered more than once, and it can bear more detail. But to save your time, which is my time, I leave the details mentioned for later, so that we can receive the questions you have, and hopefully I will be able to answer them all in this interval in which we can remain with you. So, bring out now what you have of questions, and we will start according to the Sunnah, as he—peace be upon him—said:.
Do you have something? Give the turn to someone else.
So ask the people of the message if you do not know.
فَاسْأَلُوا أَهْلَ الذِّكْرِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ لا تَعْلَمُونَ-- The questioner : ... .
