Is it permissible to eat the food of a person whose earnings we know are forbidden?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Eid Abbasi : ... ... ؟

The Shaykh : We see no impediment to a person eating the wealth of another person whose source of income is forbidden; because the sin is upon him and he bears the loss, except in one case that has no direct relation to what we are saying: if there is a moneylender whose usury is open, and some people who have a standing in society in terms of knowledge, piety, and righteousness frequently visit this moneylender for his food and drink; then these people should not do that; because their frequenting him is indirect support, and the expected course is to rebuke him; so if this rebuke does not occur, then at the very least they should not treat him as they treat other people whose earnings are lawful; so the scholars who are the model of righteousness, piety, and virtue—the rulings are not applied to individuals of the Ummah; that is: ... it is certainly a wrong, but ... sometimes it is with the tongue, and sometimes it is with the action; so one must avoid this.
As for an ordinary person who comes to an invitation, and knows that the host is a moneylender—for example—then there is no legal impediment to his eating from this invitation; of course, subject to the conditions we always assume, namely that there is no other wrong in the invitation; this is what we see in this matter.
