The Shaykh : Here, I would like to remind you of what al-Bukhari narrated in his Sahih, so that you may know the value of that verse we mentioned earlier: [Al-Ma'idah 5:3].
Al-Bukhari narrated that a scholar from among the Jewish scholars came to 'Umar ibn al-Khattab during his caliphate and said to him: O Commander of the Faithful, there is a verse in the Book of Allah that, had it been revealed to us, the Jews, we would have made the day of its revelation a festival. He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: What is this verse? So he mentioned this verse:[Al-Ma'idah 5:3] to its end. Then 'Umar said: It was indeed revealed on a day of festival, on a Friday, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was at 'Arafah—meaning: during the Farewell Pilgrimage. So this verse was revealed on a very great day in which two virtues and two festivals coincided: the festival of Friday and the festival of 'Arafah. It is as if he was saying to that Jewish scholar: Rejoice; this verse was revealed on a day of festival, the festival of Friday and the festival of 'Arafah.
Why did this Jew say: If this verse had been revealed to us, we would have made the day of its revelation a festival?
Because he knew the greatness of this blessing with which Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) favored His servants. As for us Muslims today, we have, unfortunately, not appreciated this blessing as it deserves. Therefore, you will find that many people in the later eras occupied Muslims with many prayers, dhikr, and daily recitations that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not bring. And what he (peace be upon him) brought is sufficient and enough for us, indeed, it is more than our capacity as human beings. Rather, each of us takes from this worship what he is able to do and what suits his capacity and strength.
This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.
