A reminder of the hadith of 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar in which 'Umar publicly rebuked 'Uthman in the presence of witnesses

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And it is sufficient for me to remind you of what the two Shaykhs narrated in their "Sahihayn" from the hadith of 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab was delivering the sermon on a Friday, naturally in the Prophet's Mosque (peace and blessings be upon him), when a man from among the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered, and in one narration it was 'Uthman ibn 'Affan, so 'Umar cut off his sermon and turned toward this man who had been late in hastening to attend to hear the remembrance and the Friday sermon. He replied, "O Commander of the Faithful, nothing came from me except that I heard the adhan, so I performed wudu' and came to the mosque." He said to him, rebuking him with a rhetorical question of disapproval: "Wudu' as well? And have you not heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
Whoever among you comes to the Friday prayer, let him perform ghusl
?!"
The point of this is that he rebuked 'Uthman ibn 'Affan publicly in the presence of witnesses because he was late in attending the Friday prayer and the Friday sermon.
We return to what we were discussing. The principle of teaching and reminding is based on concealing the faults of people, unless the public interest requires otherwise. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) acted upon this principle when he delivered a sermon regarding a group of people. He said—and he referred to them by their kunyas without naming any of them:
What is the matter with the people that they say such and such? !
Sunan Abi Dawud 4788Sahih (Al-Albani)
.
The point is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
As for me, أما إني
This is a direct response to what they said, excusing his (peace be upon him) little worship by claiming that Allah had forgiven him what came before of his sin and what came after.
As for me, I am the most fearful of you of Allah and the most God-fearing of you of Allah. As for me, I fast and I break the fast
meaning: I do not fast the entire year.
And I stand in prayer at night and I sleep
meaning: I do not keep the entire night awake, as some of the extremists in worship do, who add to and seek to surpass the worship of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him); they keep the entire night awake in prayer, worship, and recitation of the Qur'an. This is contrary to the guidance of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Therefore, the Lady 'Aishah said, as in "Sahih Muslim": "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) never kept the entire night awake."
So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said, reminding that the Shari'ah is a middle path, and worship is a middle path with no excess and no negligence:
As for me, I am the most fearful of you of Allah, and the most God-fearing of you of Allah. As for me, I fast and I break the fast, and I keep the night awake and I sleep, and I marry women. So whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not of me
. Thus, the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in what has come to us of Islam is what every Muslim must adhere to. And I guarantee that Dawud (peace be upon him), whose testimony by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) you just heard, that he was the most worshipful of people, if he had lived after the sending of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) with this complete and perfect Islam, he would not have been able to encompass in practice all the worship of the Messenger; that is, all the worship that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) brought by his saying, his doing, or his approval. For that reason, there is no room for any Muslim to add a worship after Allah (Mighty and Majestic) completed His religion by sending His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with this complete Islam. And after we have known that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is the most worshipful, most God-fearing, and most reverent of people, there is nothing left but to follow the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). And we are certain that we will not be able to circle around the worship of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) except briefly and for a short time, otherwise we are completely incapable of being affected by it and following the steps of the Messenger in his worship. This is impossible for all individuals of humanity after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
