The Shaykh mentioned some of the consequences of this erroneous understanding, namely their failure to distinguish between reliance upon Allah and passive dependence.

The Shaykh : Among the consequences of this reversal and inversion—for example—is that they understand reliance upon Allah (tawakkul) contrary to its legal meaning. They understand tawakkul to mean passive dependence (tawakkul), and the difference between the two is vast! Tawakkul is mentioned in many noble verses, including His saying—Blessed and Exalted is He—:
And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah فَإِذَا عَزَمْتَ فَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اللَّهِ
[Ali 'Imran 3:159]
. Thus, reliance upon Allah comes after the Muslim takes the means that usually lead to what he seeks. For example, one who wants his land to bear ripe fruit and grow abundant grain must tend to it with all the services the land usually requires, such as plowing, planting, clearing, and watering. If he does this, he relies upon Allah—Mighty and Majestic—and does not rely upon his means, because these means may be delayed. Therefore, he must combine them with reliance upon Allah—Blessed and Exalted is He.
As for a person saying, "If Allah—Mighty and Majestic—has decreed that I will eat from this land, from its fruit and its grain, then I will eat, whether I tend to it or not, whether I plow it or not," he is in reality deceiving himself and interpreting tawakkul contrary to its true intended meaning. Due to this inversion they fall into, when they interpret tawakkul in this sense, they do not fail to rely on certain texts to support their interpretation. However, at the same time, when they support their interpretation of tawakkul as passive dependence, they are also afflicted with a reversal in their understanding of some of those texts.
