What is the ruling on shaving the mustache in the religion? Is its prohibition like the prohibition of shaving the beard?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : What is the ruling on shaving the mustache in the religion? Is its prohibition like the prohibition of shaving the beard?
This is an interesting question; because in reality, shaving the mustache has two forms.
The questioner: Peace be upon you.
The Shaykh : And upon you be peace, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
Some of the Salaf, including the Companions and others, naturally, who obeyed his command (peace and blessings be upon him): used to shave their mustaches; and that was their understanding of the first part of the hadith: or . In one narration: , and in another: ; they understood from these hadiths the uprooting of the mustache, so they uprooted the mustache and let the beard grow as the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded. But other scholars did not understand their specific understanding of the mustache, but rather they understood that the intended meaning of uprooting, shaving, and cutting is what exceeds the lip, and not the uprooting of the mustache from its root and origin. They have much evidence for this, which we are not currently addressing, the clearest of which is what Imam Ahmad narrated in his Musnad from the hadith of al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and his mustache was full; meaning: it grew and lengthened until it covered the lip, as is the case with some of those who deviated from Islam in the past and present, who imitate "Stalin" and "Lenin" and their like by lengthening their mustaches. So the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) took a miswak and placed it under what had grown long of the mustache, and took a small knife and cut it. So this was a practical explanation from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) of his saying: ; meaning, uproot what exceeds the lip. So this is the correct view in the issue of the mustache; it is not shaving. But if intentions are related to some actions sometimes, then there is no doubt that there is a great difference between those who obey the two commands of shaving the mustache and letting the beard grow, but they err in understanding the meaning of shaving; there is no doubt that there is a great difference between those who uproot their mustache and the youth today who uproot the mustache along with the beard out of imitating the disbelievers. Therefore, if the motive for shaving the mustache is imitation, then this is not permissible. And if the motive for it is a wrong understanding, then it is an error, and its doer is rewarded with one reward and not blamed.
Do the hadiths of prohibition indicate prohibition? For example, not for restriction:As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 64:6 and let the beards grow?
We say: Yes, the original ruling of a command indicates obligation, and its contradiction indicates prohibition. And there are many matters that were connected with the command of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) to let the beard grow, and we have elaborated on them in my book "Etiquettes of the Wedding in the Pure Sunnah"; so whoever wishes to expand on this should refer to it.
