Exegesis of the statement of Allah, the Exalted: “And let them not display their adornment except what has appeared of it.”

The Shaykh : And another point is that the Book of Allah indicates the opposite of this expansion in defining the awrah of a woman in relation to her Muslim sister. The scholars of tafsir state that a woman has two types of adornment: apparent adornment and hidden adornment. They derived this from two noble verses:
The first verse is the statement of our Lord, Blessed and Exalted is He:
not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا
[An-Nur 24:31]
,
not expose their adornment وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ
[An-Nur 24:31]
to non-mahram men
except that which [necessarily] appears thereof إِلَّا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا
[An-Nur 24:31]
. Thus, apparent adornment is related to non-mahram men. As established in more than one hadith traced to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), apparent adornment for a woman is only the face and the hands. Everything else is hidden adornment, and it is not permissible for her to display any of it before those who are not her mahram.
