The Meaning of the Hadith of the Woman Who Displays Her Adornment Before Those Who Are Not Her Mahrams

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 19586 )
Q1: What is the meaning of this Prophetic hadith:
The parable of the woman who walks to impress others in adornments for other than her family, is that of darkness on the Day of Judgment: There is no light for her.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1167Da’if (Darussalam)
?

A1: The evidence from the Book and the Sunnah establishes the prohibition of a woman displaying her adornment to other than her mahrams, and the obligation for her to be modest and to keep away from everything that incites infatuation with her and draws the gaze of foreign men to her, whether through dress
or through speech or action. Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said:
And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment except to their husbandsوَقُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنَاتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ وَلاَ يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلاَّ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَى جُيُوبِهِنَّ وَلاَ يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلاَّ لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ
[An-Nur 24:31]
the verse. And He, Exalted and Majestic is He, said:
then do not be soft in speech [to men], lest he in whose heart is disease should covet, but speak with appropriate speech. (33) And abide in your houses and do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignoranceفَلا تَخْضَعْنَ بِالْقَوْلِ فَيَطْمَعَ الَّذِي فِي قَلْبِهِ مَرَضٌ وَقُلْنَ قَوْلا مَعْرُوفًا (32) وَقَرْنَ فِي بُيُوتِكُنَّ وَلاَ تَبَرَّجْنَ تَبَرُّجَ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ الأُولَى
[Al-Ahzab 33:32-33]
, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Every eye commits adultery, and when the woman uses perfume and she passes by a gathering, then she is like this and that.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2786Hasan (Darussalam)
meaning: an adulteress. It was narrated by al-Tirmidhi and the wording is his, and he said: a good, authentic hadith, and Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i have something similar. It is also established in (Sahih Muslim ) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Two are the types of the denizens of Hell whom I did not see: people having flogs like the tails of the ox with them and they would be beating people, and the women who would be dressed but appear to be naked, who would be inclined (to evil) and make their husbands incline towards it. Their heads would be like the humps of the bukht camel inclined to one side. They will not enter Paradise and they would not smell its odour whereas its odour would be smelt from such and such distance.
Sahih Muslim 2128
, and the hadiths in this meaning are numerous and well known. As for the hadith mentioned in the question, it was narrated by al-Tirmidhi in his (Sunan) through his chain from Maymunah bint Sa'd , the freed slave woman of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The parable of the woman who walks to impress others in adornments for other than her family, is that of darkness on the Day of Judgment: There is no light for her.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1167Da’if (Darussalam)
, and he said after it: This is a hadith we do not know except from the hadith of Musa ibn 'Ubaydah, and he is weak in hadith. It was also narrated by Abu Ya'la with the wording:
The woman who displays her adornment
... the hadith. It was also narrated by Abu al-Shaykh ibn Hayyan in his book (al-Amthal) with number (265), and al-Khatib in (Gharib al-Hadith) (2 \ 17), and the core of its chain with them is from Musa ibn 'Ubaydah, and he is weak as in (al-Taqrib) by Ibn Hajar, so the hadith
is weak. And Ibn Kathir cited it in his (History) (5 \ 330), in the mention of the freed slaves of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: Some of them narrated it from him - meaning: from Musa ibn 'Ubaydah - but did not trace it to the Prophet. The meaning of al-raffalah is: the woman who displays her adornment to other than her husband, as stated by al-Khatib , and others said: meaning: the woman who displays her adornment to one whose looking at her is forbidden. As in Fayd al-Qadir (5 \ 507). Therefore, al-Suyuti cited it in (al-Durr al-Manthur) (5 \ 44) in the interpretation of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
not expose their adornment except to their husbandsوَلاَ يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلاَّ لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ
[An-Nur 24:31]
the verse. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
