From the lessons of "Al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib" by Al-Mundhiri, Chapter: "Encouraging the remembrance of death, shortening one's hopes, and hastening in deeds"

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : ... and his family and companions, and the worst of matters are their innovations, and every ... and every religious innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is in the Fire.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said—and this is the twenty-fifth hadith: It was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The Hour is near, and they do not increase except in distance from it
. Al-Tabarani narrated it, and his narrators are relied upon in "Al-Sahih," and Al-Hakim said: "The chain is authentic," and his wording is: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The Hour is near, and people do not increase in their attachment to this world except in greed, and they do not increase in distance from Allah
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 42:80
. This hadith is hasan (good), and it has two wordings as you have seen, and the second wording is more complete than the first in both wording and meaning.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The Hour has drawn near
, and this is a summary—as you all know—taken from the text of the Noble Qur'an:
The Hour has come near, and the moon has split [in two].
[Al-Qamar 54:1]
. In a later hadith, if Allah wills, this verse will come in its entirety:
The Hour has come near, and the moon has split [in two].
[Al-Qamar 54:1]
. But the Messenger (peace be upon him) mentioned here the first part of the verse, saying:
The Hour is near, and people do not increase in their attachment to this world except in greed, and they do not increase in distance from Allah
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 42:80
.
If one of you has a copy of *al-Targhib*, your copy may be like mine here:
and they do not increase ولا تزدادون
, and that is a mistake. The correct version, as indicated by the context and by referring to the original sources, is:
and they do not increase ولا يزالون
; that is, the people who were explicitly mentioned earlier in the hadith, where he (peace be upon him) said:
The Hour is near, and people do not increase in their attachment to this world except in greed, and they do not increase in distance from Allah
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 42:80
. The purpose of the hadith is clear: it is that, although the Hour has drawn near, as our Lord (Mighty and Majestic) informed us in the verse, people are contrary to this warning with which Allah (Mighty and Majestic) warned them when He said:
The Hour has drawn near
. So, instead of being concerned with the occurrence and establishment of the Hour—and this concern necessitates preparing for death before it descends—what do people do instead of this preparation?
They do not increase in their attachment to this world except in greed
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 42:80
; that is, as if the Hour had moved away from them and not drawn near to them. Therefore, in the first narration, when he said:
The Hour is near, and they do not increase except in distance from it
; meaning, in their behavior regarding their lack of preparation for the establishment of the Hour, as if the Hour is only increasing in distance for them. Therefore, they are not concerned, but rather they are concerned with the opposite of what this divine warning necessitates from them, from His saying:
The Hour has drawn near
, which is preparing for death through righteous deeds. So they are contrary to that; they only increase in eagerness for this world, gathering it, and competing for it. And by that, they only increase in distance from Allah.
Every Muslim must know that when Allah (Mighty and Majestic) informs us of the nearness of the Hour and the approach of its minor signs, let alone the major ones, He means thereby to warn the living that the Hour may overtake them before the repentant among them repents, and before the wretched one turns from his evil deeds to righteous deeds. So His saying (Mighty and Majestic):
The Hour has drawn near
is in the meaning of "prepare for it, for the Hour is near." But people—meaning, most people—as came in this hadith:
The Hour is near, and people do not increase in their attachment to this world except in greed, and they do not increase in distance from Allah
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 42:80
. This is a good hadith, as we said.
