Explanation of Hadiths from al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib by al-Mundhiri, from the Book of Repentance and Asceticism: The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said

The Shaykh : The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This is the twenty-fifth hadith. It was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Al-Tabarani narrated it, and its narrators are relied upon in Sahih al-Bukhari, and al-Hakim said it has a sound chain. Its wording is: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 42:80.
This hadith is hasan (good) and has two wordings, as you have seen. The second wording is more complete than the first in both wording and meaning. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This phrase, as you all know, is taken from the text of the Noble Qur'an: [Al-Qamar 54:1] And this verse will come in full in a later hadith, if Allah wills: [Al-Qamar 54:1] But the Messenger (peace be upon him) mentioned here the first part of the verse, saying: Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 42:80.
If one of you has a copy of *al-Targhib*, it may be like my copy here: This is a mistake, and the correct reading, as indicated by the context and by referring to the sources, is that is, the people who are explicitly mentioned in the preceding part of the hadith, where he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 42:80 The purpose of the hadith is clear: even though the Hour is approaching, as our Lord (Mighty and Majestic) informed us in the verse, the people are contrary to this warning with which Allah (Mighty and Majestic) warned them when He said: So, instead of being concerned about the occurrence and establishment of the Hour—and this concern necessitates preparing for death before it descends—what do people do instead of this preparation? Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 42:80 It is as if the Hour has moved away from them and not drawn near to them. Therefore, in the first narration, when it said: meaning, in their conduct and their lack of preparation for the establishment of the Hour, it is as if the Hour is only increasing in distance from them. For that reason, they are not concerned; rather, they are concerned with the opposite of what this divine warning necessitates from them, namely, from His saying: preparing for death through righteous deeds. They are contrary to that; they only increase in eagerness for this world, in gathering it, and in competing for it. And by doing so, they only increase in distance from Allah.
It must be known by every Muslim that when Allah (Mighty and Majestic) informs us of the nearness of the Hour and the approach of its minor signs, let alone the major ones, He means thereby to warn the living that the Hour may overtake them before the repentant among them repents, and before the wretched one turns from his evil deeds to righteous deeds. So His saying (Mighty and Majestic): means "prepare for it." The Hour is near, but people—meaning most people, as came in this hadith: Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 42:80 This is a hasan (good) hadith, as we said.
The Hour has drawn near, and they do not increase from it except in distance
The Hour has drawn near, and people do not increase in their desire for this world except greed, and they do not increase from Allah except in distance
This hadith is hasan (good) and has two wordings, as you have seen. The second wording is more complete than the first in both wording and meaning. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The Hour has drawn near
The Hour has come near, and the moon has split [in two].
The Hour has come near, and the moon has split [in two].
The Hour has drawn near, and people do not increase in their desire for this world except greed, and they do not increase from Allah except in distance
If one of you has a copy of *al-Targhib*, it may be like my copy here:
and they do not increase
ولا تزدادونand they do not increase
The Hour has drawn near, and people do not increase in their desire for this world except greed, and they do not increase from Allah except in distance
The Hour has drawn near
اقتربت الساعةthey do not increase in anything but greed for this world
The Hour has drawn near, and they do not increase from it except in distance
The Hour has drawn near
It must be known by every Muslim that when Allah (Mighty and Majestic) informs us of the nearness of the Hour and the approach of its minor signs, let alone the major ones, He means thereby to warn the living that the Hour may overtake them before the repentant among them repents, and before the wretched one turns from his evil deeds to righteous deeds. So His saying (Mighty and Majestic):
