The Shaykh : The first hadith established in this chapter is his statement: Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
Allah the Exalted said: O son of Adam, as long as you call upon Me and hope for My mercy, I will forgive you for what you have done, and I will not care about it. O son of Adam, if your sins were as much as the foam of the sea, then you sought forgiveness from Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, if you came to Me with sins filling the earth, then you met Me not associating anything with Me, I would come to you with forgiveness filling it.
. Al-Tirmidhi narrated it and said: It is a good hadith.
Qirab al-ardh, with the qaf kasrah—though the dammah is more common—means what nearly fills it. We read this hadith to you in the previous lesson and commented on what Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) facilitated regarding its first sentence, specifically the statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about his Lord:
O son of Adam! Verily as long as you called upon Me and hoped in Me, I forgave you, despite whatever may have occurred from you, and I did not mind. يا ابن آدم ، إنك ما دعوتني ورجوتني غفرت لك على ما كان منك ولا أبالي
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3540Hasan (Darussalam)
. We explained that supplication in Islam is of great importance, and that supplication, seeking refuge, and humility before Allah (Mighty and Majestic) are the way of the prophets. We also explained that one of the deviations some people have fallen into regarding Islam is their claim that sincere people who have full trust in Allah (Mighty and Majestic) do not resort to supplication; to the point that one of them said, "Your seeking from Him is an accusation against Him." We clarified that this is a deviation from this hadith and other hadiths of similar meaning, as well as many verses, some of which we mentioned last night.
Now we continue commenting on the remainder of this hadith. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) relates that his Lord said:
O son of Adam! Verily as long as you called upon Me and hoped in Me, I forgave you, despite whatever may have occurred from you, and I did not mind. يا ابن آدم ، إنك ما دعوتني ورجوتني غفرتُ لك على ما كان منك ولا أبالي
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3540Hasan (Darussalam)
. The purpose of this passage is to draw the Muslim's attention to being constantly desirous of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), humbly supplicating to Him to forgive his sins, and not forgetting that he is in need of his Lord's (Mighty and Majestic) compassion and forgiveness.
