I am a young man and I want to marry my maternal uncle’s daughter, but there is a man who was breastfed with my maternal uncle by my grandmother, making my maternal uncle his brother through breastfeeding.

The questioner : I am a young man and I want to marry my maternal uncle’s daughter, but there is a man who was breastfed with my maternal uncle by my grandmother, making my maternal uncle his brother through breastfeeding. This daughter of my maternal uncle was breastfed by this man’s mother, making her his sister through breastfeeding. Is it permissible for me to marry my maternal uncle’s daughter, given that there is no breastfeeding relationship between us, neither from my mother nor from her mother? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : Before answering this question, I would like to clarify that the breastfeeding that establishes prohibition is five distinct feedings within the first two years before weaning. Anything less than five feedings has no effect. If a child is breastfed by a woman four times, he does not become her son, because five feedings are required, as established in Sahih Muslim in the hadith of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). Once this is clear, the man who was breastfed by your grandmother does not become your maternal uncle unless the conditions of breastfeeding are met. If he is your maternal uncle, then the daughter of your maternal uncle whom you wish to marry is permissible for you, even if she was breastfed by the mother of the man who was breastfed with your maternal uncle by your grandmother. This is because the prohibition through breastfeeding extends only to the breastfed child and his descendants. As for the relatives of the breastfed child, whether ancestors or collaterals, the prohibition does not extend to them.
