Belief in Sorcery

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: How authentic is the hadith that says:
Three do not enter Paradise: a habitual drinker of intoxicants, one who severs family ties, and one who believes in sorceryثلاثة لا يدخلون الجنة: مدمن خمر، وقاطع رحم، ومصدق بالسحر
? And what does it mean to believe in sorcery? Is it by the power of the sorcerer, or by believing that what the sorcerer sees has changed before the person is bewitched?
I ask for clarification on this issue. May Allah reward you with good.

Answer: As for the hadith the questioner referred to:
And there are three who will not enter Paradiseثلاثة لا يدخلون الجنة
Sunan an-Nasa'i 2562Hasan (Darussalam)
…, it was narrated by Imam Ahmad and Ibn Hibban in his Sahih, and al-Hakim graded it as authentic, and al-Dhahabi approved of it—may Allah have mercy on them all.

And as for its meaning: It is a severe warning against anyone who believes in sorcery in any form, including astrology. As he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
If anyone acquires any knowledge of astrology, he acquires a branch of magic of which he gets more as long as he continues to do so.من اقتبس علمًا من النجوم اقتبس شعبة من السحر زاد ما زاد
Sunan Abi Dawud 3905Hasan (Al-Albani)
.
Believing in sorcery is a great sin and a major crime; because it is obligatory to deny the sorcerers and astrologers, prevent them, and take action against them to stop them from engaging in these blameworthy acts; because by doing so, they misguide creation, spread falsehood among people, and corrupt beliefs.
Sorcery is disbelief, as indicated by the Noble Qur'an and the Sunnah, and it is obligatory to kill sorcerers. If one believes them, it means he has agreed with them and approved of their vile profession. Therefore, it is obligatory to deny them, fight them, and prevent them from practicing these blameworthy trades.
As for the effect of sorcery and the resulting afflictions, this is a reality that has an impact; it kills, causes illness, separates a person from his spouse, and creates discord among people. This effect is a reality. However, believing the astrologer in what he claims of knowledge of the unseen and reporting about hidden and future matters, this carries a great warning and a major sin. And Allah the Exalted knows best.
