Greeting the sneezer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Regarding greeting the sneezer in a gathering, is it required of the whole group? Or is it sufficient for one person to do it?

Answer:
Greeting the sneezer is a right of a Muslim over his Muslim brother. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When one of you sneezs and praises Allah, then greet him.” This is conditional on his praising Allah after the sneeze; if he does so, he is greeted. If he does not praise Allah, he is not greeted. Greeting the sneezer means removing the feeling of schadenfreude from him by making a supplication for him, as in the phrase: “May Allah have mercy on you.” This is the greeting; and this is a right of a Muslim over a Muslim. If there are many people present, it is sufficient for one of them to do it. This is a collective obligation (fard kifayah); if one of them performs it, that is sufficient.
