The Ruling on Reciting Dhikr with a Misbaha
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Regarding the use of prayer beads for dhikr, is it a religious innovation, and should one who uses prayer beads for dhikr be rebuked?
First: Leaving off the use of prayer beads for dhikr is preferable, and it is not a religious innovation; because it has a basis, which is the dhikr of some of the Companions using pebbles; but the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) guided to the fact that dhikr with the fingers is better. And he said: (Tie [your beads] with your fingers, addressing the women, for they will be questioned about them), so dhikr with prayer beads is not forbidden and not a religious innovation; but leaving it off is preferable; because the one who does dhikr with prayer beads has left what is better.
Second: Perhaps something of showing off in worship may mix into his dhikr; because we see some people wearing a prayer bead necklace with a thousand beads, as if saying to people: Look at me, I am doing a thousand dhikrs.
Third: The one who does dhikr with prayer beads is usually heedless in his heart, and for this reason you find him doing dhikr with prayer beads while his eyes are in the sky, to the right, and to the left, which indicates heedlessness of the heart.
So it is preferable for a person to do dhikr with his fingers, and it is preferable to do dhikr with the right hand rather than the left; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (used to tie his dhikr with his right hand), and if he does dhikr with both hands there is nothing wrong with it; but the best is to do dhikr with his right hand only.
