[The Meaning of the Word (al-A'raf)]

I heard a person say: Are al-A'raf barriers between Paradise and the Fire in which they remain for a number of years?

When the Day of Resurrection comes, people are divided into three groups: One group whose good deeds outweigh their bad deeds; these are not punished and enter Paradise. Another group whose bad deeds outweigh their good deeds; these deserve punishment according to their bad deeds, then they are saved and enter Paradise. A third group whose bad and good deeds are equal; these are the people of al-A'raf. They are not from the people of Paradise nor from the people of the Fire, but they are in a high, elevated intermediate place where they see the Fire and see Paradise. They remain there as long as Allah wills, and in the end, they enter Paradise. This is part of the perfection of the justice of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), that He gave every person what he deserves. So, the one whose good deeds outweigh his bad deeds is from the people of Paradise, the one whose bad deeds outweigh his good deeds is punished in the Fire as long as Allah wills, and the one whose good and bad deeds are equal is from the people of al-A'raf. However, al-A'raf is not a permanent abode,And the permanent abode is: but rather either to Paradise or to the Fire. May Allah make me and you among the people of Paradise.
