The ruling on reciting the adhkar in a set order in the morning and evening, and reciting Surat al-Asr at the conclusion of the gathering
His Eminence the Shaykh: Some people have set recitations (awrad) that they say before sunset and before sunrise in a specific order; these are hadiths from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) preserved in a specific order, and they are consistent in performing them daily. What is the ruling on reciting Surat al-Asr at the conclusion of the gathering? May Allah reward you with good.
As for the recitations (awrad) transmitted from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), whether from the Qur'an or from the Prophetic adhkar, they are to be performed as they were transmitted: whether they are for the morning or the evening, or after the prayers, or for specific reasons such as the dhikr for entering and leaving the home. The important point is that the adhkar and awrad transmitted from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) are to be performed as they were transmitted.
As for the adhkar that were not transmitted from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), or that were transmitted in a manner different from the one in which a person performs them, then doing so constitutes a religious innovation (bid'ah) if a person engages in it; because an innovation may lie in the essence of the act of worship or in the description of the act of worship. As for concluding the gathering with Surat al-Asr, that is a religious innovation (bid'ah) and has no basis.
