Exegesis of His saying, the Exalted: (And what they took exception with them was)
Last week we discussed the first verses of Surat al-Buruj until we reached the saying of Allah the Exalted: [al-Buruj:8] Meaning: What these people who kindled the fire with the bodies of these believers took exception with them was only this,Meaning: namely that they believed in Allah, Mighty and Majestic: [Al-Buruj 85:8]
And his statement: (The Mighty) The Mighty: He is the Prevailing One whom nothing can prevail over; so He, Glorified and Exalted is He, has the prevalence and might over everyone,And when the hypocrites said: [al-Munafiqun:8] Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said: [al-Munafiqun:8] .
His statement: (The Praiseworthy) Meaning: The One who is praised, so Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, is praised in every state, and it was from the guidance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that when something that pleased him came to him, he would say: (Praise be to Allah by whose grace good deeds are completed) and when something other than that came to him, he would say: (Praise be to Allah in every state) .
And this is what a person should say when something disliked occurs: (Praise be to Allah in every state) As for what you hear from some people: Praise be to Allah who is not praised for any disliked thing other than Him, this is contrary to what the Sunnah brought,Rather, say as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (Praise be to Allah in every state) As for saying: (Praise be to Allah who is not praised for any disliked thing other than Him) it is as if you are now declaring that you dislike what Allah has decreed for you, and this is not befitting, rather it is obligatory for a person to be pleased with what Allah has decreed for him, whether it is something that distresses him or something that pleases him; because the One who decreed it for you is Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and He is your Lord, and you are His slave, and He is your Master and you are His slave, so if Allah is the One who decreed for you what you dislike, do not be distressed, it is obligatory upon you to be patient and not to be angry, not with your heart, not with your tongue, and not with your limbs, be patient and bear the matter and it will pass, for the permanence of a state is impossible,The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (And know that victory is with patience, and that relief is with distress, and that with hardship there is ease) .
So His saying (Exalted and Majestic is He): (The Praiseworthy) Meaning: The One who is praised in every state, whether in ease or in hardship; because if He decrees ease or hardship, it is a trial and a test,Allah the Exalted said: [al-Anbiya:35] .
And when Sulayman (peace be upon him) saw the throne of Bilqis before him in an instant, what did he say?He said: [al-Naml:40] .
So you, my brother! If you are struck with a blessing, do not take it as a sign of Allah's pleasure with you, so you rejoice and play, it is a blessing without doubt, but know that you are being tested with it, will you give thanks for it or will you not give thanks? And if you are struck with hardship, be patient, for that is also a trial and a test from Allah, Mighty and Majestic, to test you, will you be patient or will you not be patient? And if you are patient and seek reward from Allah, then Allah says: [al-Zumar:10] .
It is permissible that the meaning of His saying: The Praiseworthy, He is the One who praises, for He, Glorified and Exalted is He, praises whoever deserves praise, He commends His slaves from among the messengers, the prophets, and the righteous, and the commendation of them is praise for them, so He, Exalted and Majestic is He, is the One who praises and He is also the One who is praised, and it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: (Indeed, Allah is pleased with the slave who eats a meal and praises Him for it, and drinks a drink and praises Him for it) because if Allah had not made this meal or drink easy for you, you would not have obtained it,Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said: [al-Waqi'ah:63-64] Answer this question, Allah asks us (Do you plant it or are We the planters?) What is the answer?
Rather, You, O Lord [al-Waqi'ah:65] After it comes out and souls become attached to it; Allah makes it rubble, and He did not say, Mighty and Majestic is He, if We willed, We would not have made it grow; because its growing and souls becoming attached to it and then becoming rubble is more impactful on the soul than it not growing at all.
Then He moved on to the water and said: [al-Waqi'ah:68-69] The answer: Rather, You, O our Lord, [al-Waqi'ah:70] Meaning: Salty, not sweet, a person cannot drink it [al-Waqi'ah:70] Meaning: So do you not thank Allah for that, and here He, Mighty and Majestic is He, did not say if We willed, We would not have sent it down from the clouds; because its coming down but not being drinkable or bearable due to its saltiness is more severe than it not coming down at all, so reflect on the Noble Qur'an and you will find in it many secrets and wisdoms.
Last week we discussed the first verses of Surat al-Buruj until we reached the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And they resented them not except because they believed in Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy,
وَمَا نَقَمُوا مِنْهُمْ إِلَّا أَنْ يُؤْمِنُوا بِاللَّهِ الْعَزِيزِ الْحَمِيدِexcept because they believed in Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy,
And his statement: (The Mighty) The Mighty: He is the Prevailing One whom nothing can prevail over; so He, Glorified and Exalted is He, has the prevalence and might over everyone,And when the hypocrites said:
If we return to al-Madinah, the more honored [for power] will surely expel therefrom the more humble
And to Allah belongs [all] honor, and to His Messenger, and to the believers, but the hypocrites do not know.
So His saying (Exalted and Majestic is He): (The Praiseworthy) Meaning: The One who is praised in every state, whether in ease or in hardship; because if He decrees ease or hardship, it is a trial and a test,Allah the Exalted said:
And We test you with evil and with good as trial
And when Sulayman (peace be upon him) saw the throne of Bilqis before him in an instant, what did he say?He said:
This is from the favor of my Lord to test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful
And if you are patient and seek reward from Allah, then Allah says:
Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account."
It is permissible that the meaning of His saying: The Praiseworthy, He is the One who praises, for He, Glorified and Exalted is He, praises whoever deserves praise, He commends His slaves from among the messengers, the prophets, and the righteous, and the commendation of them is praise for them, so He, Exalted and Majestic is He, is the One who praises and He is also the One who is praised, and it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: (Indeed, Allah is pleased with the slave who eats a meal and praises Him for it, and drinks a drink and praises Him for it) because if Allah had not made this meal or drink easy for you, you would not have obtained it,Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said:
(63) And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? (64) Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower?
Rather, You, O Lord
If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris
Then He moved on to the water and said:
