Question:
From the Homs Governorate in the Syrian Arab Republic, a listener whose name is symbolized by the letters (S. H. J) asks about the interpretation of the saying of the Truth, Blessed and Exalted is He:
upon you is [responsibility for] yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guidedعَلَيْكُمْ أَنفُسَكُمْ لا يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ
[Al-Ma'idah: 105]? And does this mean that we should leave off enjoining good and forbidding evil?

Answer:
The noble verse indicates that it is obligatory for a person to care for himself, to be concerned with his own state, and to strive for his rectification. It does not harm him if someone else goes astray after he has been guided. A person is responsible for himself, and the astrayness of others does not harm him. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says:
and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of anotherوَلا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَى
[Fatir: 18]. And in the authentic hadith, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The sinner does not sin except against himselfلا يجني الجاني إلا على نفسه
. So the believer must strive for the rectification of his own self and his uprightness in obedience to Allah and His Messenger, and it does not harm him if someone goes astray after he has been guided.
And the one who leaves off enjoining good and forbidding evil has not been guided; he is deficient in guidance and deficient in faith. So the meaning is that it does not harm him if someone goes astray, provided he has fulfilled the obligation that is upon him. And it is obligatory upon him to enjoin good and forbid evil; this is among his obligations. The Companion Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) gave a sermon to the people and said to them: "Some people recite this verse and place it in the wrong context. And I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
lf the people see evil and do not change it, soon Allah will send His punishment upon them all.إن الناس إذا رأوا المنكر فلم يغيروه أوشك أن يعمهم الله بعقابه
Musnad Ahmad 1Sahih (Darussalam)
."
And his intention (may Allah be pleased with him) was that no one who neglects enjoining good and forbidding evil is considered guided. He is deficient in guidance, deficient in faith, and weak in faith. So the meaning of
If you have been guidedإذا اهتديم
is: if you fulfill the obligation that is upon you and leave off what Allah has forbidden for you, then it does not harm you if someone goes astray after that... It does not harm you if your father, your brother, the people of your town, or all the people go astray. It does not harm you. If you fulfill the obligation and strive in fulfilling the obligation, then it does not harm you if someone goes astray. And your Lord says, Exalted is He:
and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of anotherوَلا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَى
[Fatir: 18].
But if you fall short in the obligation that is upon you, it will harm you. So if you do not call to Allah, do not enjoin good, do not forbid evil, and do not fulfill what Allah has made obligatory upon you regarding the rights of your children, or the rights of your wife, or the rights of your neighbors, then you are deficient in guidance at that time. That will harm you, until you fulfill the obligation that is upon you for the sake of Allah and His servants.
And among the rights of Allah upon you is that you fulfill the acts of obedience He has made obligatory upon you and leave off what Allah has forbidden for you. And among the rights of Allah upon you is that you enjoin good and forbid evil, that you give sincere advice to Allah and His servants, and that you call to Allah according to your ability. And among the rights upon you is also that you fulfill the rights of your wife and your children by advising them, guiding them to good, and raising them with Islamic upbringing. And that you fulfill the rights of your neighbors by honoring them, being kind to them, and withholding harm from them. And honoring your guest... and other such rights. So the one who does not fulfill the rights that are upon him is not called guided; he is called deficient in guidance and weak in faith, until he fulfills the obligations that are upon him. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
