Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted in Surat al-Buruj, from His saying:

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. As for what follows:
This is the final session of the month of Rabi' al-Thani, year 1414 AH, which takes place on Thursday, the twenty-eighth of that month. We ask Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, to conclude for us and for you with good, and to make the outcome good for us and for the Muslims in general.
Last week we spoke about the beginning of Surat al-Buruj, until we reached the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And they resented them not except because they believed in Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy,
[Al-Buruj 85:8]
, meaning: What did these people who kindled the fire with the bodies of these believers object to, except this, meaning: except that they believed in Allah, Mighty and Majestic:
except because they believed in Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy,
[Al-Buruj 85:8]
.
This objection is the most deserving of being rejected, because the one who believes in Allah, the Exalted, the Praiseworthy, must be helped and supported, and the ways must be made easy for him. As for preventing him and restraining him until it reaches the point of being burned in the fire, there is no doubt that this is a great transgression. This is not a fault in them; rather, they are praised for it, because they worshipped the One who is worthy of worship, namely Allah, Exalted and Majestic, who created the creation so that they would carry out His worship. So whoever carries out this worship has recognized the wisdom of creation and given it its due. And His saying:
except because they believed in Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy,
[Al-Buruj 85:8]
: "Al-Aziz" is the Prevailing One whom nothing can overpower, so He, Glorified and Exalted is He, has supremacy and might over everyone. When the hypocrites said:
If we return to al-Madinah, the more honored [for power] will surely expel therefrom the more humble
[Al-Munafiqun 63:8]
, Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said:
And to Allah belongs [all] honor, and to His Messenger, and to the believers, but the hypocrites do not know.
[Al-Munafiqun 63:8]
.
And His saying:
the Praiseworthy الحَمِيد
means: The Praiseworthy. So Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, is Praiseworthy in every state. It was among the guidance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that when something pleasing came to him, he would say:
Al-hamdu lillahil-ladhi bi ni'matihi tatimmus-salihat (Praise is to Allah by Whose grace good deeds are completed)
Sunan Ibn Majah 3803Da'if (Darussalam)
, and when something contrary to that came to him, he would say:
Al-Hamdulillah 'Ala Kulli Hal (All praise is due to Allah in every circumstance).
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2738Hasan (Darussalam)
. And this is what a person should do: to say when something disliked occurs:
Al-Hamdulillah 'Ala Kulli Hal (All praise is due to Allah in every circumstance).
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2738Hasan (Darussalam)
.
As for what we hear from some people saying: "Praise be to Allah who is not praised for a disliked thing other than Him", this is contrary to what the Sunnah brought. Rather, say as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Al-Hamdulillah 'Ala Kulli Hal (All praise is due to Allah in every circumstance).
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2738Hasan (Darussalam)
. As for saying "who is not praised for a disliked thing other than Him," it is as if you are now declaring that you dislike what Allah has decreed for you. And this is not befitting. Rather, it is obligatory for a person to be pleased with what Allah has decreed for him, whether it pleases him or displeases him, because who is it that decreed it for you?
Allah, Mighty and Majestic, is your Lord and you are His servant. He is your Owner and you are His slave. So if Allah is the One who has decreed for you what you dislike, do not be distressed. It is obligatory upon you to be pleased and patient, and not to be angry, neither with your heart, nor with your tongue, nor with your limbs. Be patient and endure, and the matter will pass. "The permanence of a state is impossible". The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
And know that victory is with patience, and that relief is with distress, and that with hardship there is ease
.
So His saying, Exalted and Majestic is He:
the Praiseworthy الحَمِيد
, what is the meaning of "Al-Hamid"?
Answer me?
The Praiseworthy, the Praiseworthy in every state, whether in ease or in hardship. Because if He decrees ease, it is a trial and a test. Allah the Exalted said:
And We test you with evil and with good as trial
[Al-Anbya 21:35]
.
And when Sulayman saw the throne of Bilqis before him in an instant, what did he say?
He said:
This is from the favor of my Lord to test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful
[An-Naml 27:40]
. So, my brother, if you are struck with a blessing, do not take it as merely a blessing and become arrogant and rejoice. It is a blessing, no doubt, but know that you are being tested with it: will you give thanks for it or will you not?
If you are struck with hardship, be patient, for that is also a trial and a test from Allah, Mighty and Majestic, to test you: will you be patient or will you not? And if you are patient and seek reward from Allah, then Allah says:
Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account." إِنَّمَا يُوَفَّى الصَّابِرُونَ أَجْرَهُمْ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ
[Az-Zumar 39:10]
.
And it is possible that the meaning of His saying:
the Praiseworthy الحَمِيد
is that it has another meaning, which is "The One Who Praises." For He, Glorified and Exalted is He, praises those who deserve praise. He commends His servants, the messengers, the prophets, and the righteous. Commending them is praise for them. So He, Exalted and Majestic is He, is the One Who Praises, and He is also the Praiseworthy.
And it is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Allah is pleased with His slave who says: 'Al-hamdu lillah (praise be to Allah)' when he takes a morsel of food and drinks a draught of water.
Riyad as-Salihin 1396
, because if Allah had not made this food and drink easy for you, you would not have obtained it. Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said:
(63) And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? (64) Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower?
[Al-Waqi'ah 56:63-64]
. Answer this question?
Allah asks us:
Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower?
[Al-Waqi'ah 56:64]
. What is the answer?
The answer is: Rather, You, our Lord.
If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris
[Al-Waqi'ah 56:65]
. After it comes out and souls become attached to it, Allah makes it debris. And He did not say, Mighty and Majestic is He, "If We had willed, We would not have grown it." Because its growing and souls becoming attached to it, then it becoming debris, has a stronger impact on the soul than it not growing at all.
(65) If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, (66) [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; (67) Rather, we have been deprived."
[Al-Waqi'ah 56:65-67]
.
Then He came to drinking and said:
(68) And have you seen the water that you drink? (69) Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down?
[Al-Waqi'ah 56:68-69]
:
The answer is: Rather, You, our Lord.
If We willed, We could make it bitter
[Al-Waqi'ah 56:70]
, meaning: Salty, not sweet, which a person cannot drink.
So why do you not give thanks?
, meaning: So will you not give thanks to Allah for that? And here He did not say, Mighty and Majestic is He, "If We had willed, We would not have sent it down from the clouds." Because its being sent down but not being drinkable is more unbearable than it not being sent down at all. So reflect, my brother, on the Noble Qur'an, and you will find in it many secrets and wisdoms.
(8) And they resented them not except because they believed in Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy, (9) To whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And Allah, over all things, is Witness.
[Al-Buruj 85:8-9]
:
to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth
[Al-A'raf 7:158]
: To Him alone belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. No one owns them except He, Mighty and Majestic. So He owns the heavens and what is in them, and the earths and what is in them, and what is between them and what is in them. Everything is the property of Allah, and no one shares with Him in His dominion. And what is attributed to us as ownership, for example, it is said: This house belongs to so-and-so, this car belongs to so-and-so, that is limited ownership, and not true ownership. Because if a person wanted to demolish his house without a reason, does he have the right to do so?
Do you answer?
No, if you wanted to demolish your house without a reason, you do not have the right to do this. It is forbidden for you, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the waste of wealth.
If you wanted to burn your car without a reason, do you have the right to do this?
You do not have the right. Even if you did it, people would restrict your legal capacity. Even the judge would restrict you, preventing you from disposing of your wealth, even though Allah has already prevented you. So our ownership is limited, and complete ownership belongs to Allah.
To whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And Allah, over all things, is Witness.
[Al-Buruj 85:9]
. The Exalted is aware of everything, including what these disbelievers do to the believers by burning them in the fire, and He will reward them. But despite their doing this heinous act, He said:
Indeed, those who have tortured the believing men and believing women and then have not repented will have the punishment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the Burning Fire.
[Al-Buruj 85:10]
. Some of the Salaf said: "Look at the forbearance of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. They burn His close friends, and then He offers them repentance". He says:
Indeed, those who have tortured the believing men and believing women and then have not repented will have the punishment of Hell
[Al-Buruj 85:10]
. And if they repent, there is nothing upon them. So reflect, my brother, on the forbearance of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, where these disbelievers burn His close friends, and burning is the most severe form of torture, and then He says:
Indeed, those who have tortured the believing men and believing women and then have not repented
[Al-Buruj 85:10]
. The scholars said: "Fatanu" means: They burned. As He said, the Exalted:
(13) [It is] the Day they will be tormented over the Fire (14) [And will be told], "Taste your torment. This is that for which you were impatient."
[Adh-Dhariyat 51:13-14]
. So these people burned the believing men and the believing women. They bring the man and the woman and burn them in the fire. He, Mighty and Majestic, says:
and then have not repented
[Al-Buruj 85:10]
, meaning: They did not return to Allah.
will have the punishment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the Burning Fire.
[Al-Buruj 85:10]
: Because they burned the close friends of Allah, so their recompense was like their deed:
A recompense in kind.
.
In these verses are lessons:
That Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, may allow His enemies to prevail over His close friends. So do not be surprised if Allah, Mighty and Majestic, allows the disbelievers to prevail over the believers, killing them, burning them, and violating their honor. Do not be surprised; for Allah, the Exalted, there is wisdom in this.
The believers who are afflicted have a great reward with Allah. And these transgressing disbelievers, Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, has given them respite and is luring them on in ways they do not know. And the remaining Muslims have a lesson and a warning in what happened to their brothers. For example, we are now hearing about the great violations happening in Bosnia and Herzegovina: violation of honor, destruction of wealth, and starving the young and the old. We hear things that make one cry. So we say: Glory be to Allah, what is this allowance that Allah has allowed over these believers?
We say: My brother, do not be surprised. Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, has given us examples from those who came before, who burned the believers in the fire. So do not be surprised about those who were allowed to prevail over our brothers in Bosnia and Herzegovina and other lands of the Muslims. This is an elevation of ranks for the afflicted, and an expiation of sins, and it is a lesson for the rest. We must take a lesson from this.
And it is also a temptation for these disbelievers so that they may prevail, and then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will take them with a mighty and powerful taking.
And in these verses are also lessons: That these disbelievers did not take exception of the Muslims for any sin except one thing, which is that they believe in Allah, the Exalted, the Praiseworthy. And this is not a sin; rather, this is the truth. And whoever rejects it is the one who is rejected.
We ask Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) to grant victory to the Muslims everywhere, to protect us from the evil of our enemies, and to turn their plots back upon themselves. Indeed, He is capable of all things. We will use the remaining time to answer questions. Previously, we used to allocate it to the right side only until it was finished, but I have decided to allocate one to the right and one to the left, because the people on the left say: "We are forbidden [from asking], we come early, and then the time ends and we have not gotten a question." Therefore, my brother Musa, one on the right and one on the left.
