The detailed ruling on a mosque imam who says: If this stipend were removed, I would leave leading the prayer in the mosque

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Your Eminence! What is your opinion of a mosque imam who says: If this stipend—which he receives monthly—were removed, I would leave leading the prayer in the mosque. What is the ruling on praying behind him?The Shaykh: By Allah! He should not say such a thing. But: (Actions are by intentions) Did he intend that if it were removed, he would be left without a means of livelihood, so he would go and seek a livelihood? In that case, there is nothing wrong with it; for a person takes it to help him with the trials of this world. Or did he intend to take it as a wage, such that even if he were rich, he would leave leading the prayer if the stipend were removed? No, in that case, there is no doubt that he is not paid for his leading of the prayer, and he has no reward in the Hereafter; because he intended to seek this world with his deed. Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked about a man who said to his people, after they had asked him to lead them in the night prayer of Ramadan:So Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I seek refuge in Allah. Who prays behind such a person?! Actions are by intentions. But this man should be advised: As long as you are praying, and leading the prayer is undoubtedly a blessing from Allah (Mighty and Majestic) upon the servant, and it helps him to perform the prayer, then make your intention for Allah, and the salary will come to you.
