The Categories of Hypocrisy and Its Criteria

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Many are those who accuse others of hypocrisy in this age,And it is argued by the verse:
And when they stand for prayer, they stand lazilyوَإِذَا قَامُوا إِلَى الصَّلاةِ قَامُوا كُسَالَى
[Al-Nisa: 142] and others, so what is the criterion for hypocrisy?
Hypocrisy—may Allah reward you—Two types: is doctrinal hypocrisy and practical hypocrisy. Doctrinal hypocrisy resides in the heart, and no one knows it except Allah. For this reason, some of the Companions who committed a deviation,So 'Umar said: [that he was a hypocrite], and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) refuted him.
So doctrinal hypocrisy resides in the heart, and it is not permissible for a person to accuse any of the Muslims, or those who have loyalty to Allah and His Messenger, of it without clear evidence.

And practical hypocrisy: That a person exhibits one of the characteristics of the hypocrites,So there is no harm in saying: this is a hypocrite for this action. So if we see a man speaking and lying; We said: this is a hypocrite with practical hypocrisy in this matter. And if we see him standing up for prayer while being lazy;We say: this is a characteristic of the hypocrites in him; because he resembles the hypocrites in his standing up for prayer in a state of laziness. So practical hypocrisy is broad; whoever agrees with the hypocrites in one of their characteristics is a hypocrite in that specific action. And as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (The signs of the hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks his promise; and when he is trusted, he betrays), these are the signs of the hypocrite, but these signs may be exhibited by some Muslims; So we say: he is a hypocrite in this matter.
