Exegesis of His saying, the Exalted: (And faces on that Day will be humbled)

Then Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, divided this Day into two categories, saying:
(2) [Some] faces, that Day, will be humbled, (3) Working [hard] and exhausted.وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَاشِعَةٌ * عَامِلَةٌ نَاصِبَةٌ
[Al-Ghashiyah: 2-3] and (humbled) means: submissive,As Allah the Exalted said:
And you will see them being exposed to the Fire, humbled from humiliation, looking from [behind] a covert glance.وَتَرَاهُمْ يُعْرَضُونَ عَلَيْهَا خَاشِعِينَ مِنَ الذُّلِّ يَنْظُرُونَ مِنْ طَرْفٍ خَفِيٍّ
[Al-Shura: 45] .
laboring, wearyعَامِلَةٌ نَاصِبَةٌ
working a work that results in exhaustion, which is fatigue.

The scholars said: And that is because they will be tasked on the Day of Resurrection with dragging chains and shackles, and wading into the Fire of Hell—may Allah protect us from it—just as a man wades into mud. So it is a working, tiring state due to the work it is tasked with on the Day of Resurrection; for it is a work of punishment and retribution—may Allah grant us safety. And it is not as some people said: The intended meaning is the disbelievers:
[They are] those whose effort is lost in worldly life, while they think that they are doing well in work."الَّذِينَ ضَلَّ سَعْيُهُمْ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَهُمْ يَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّهُمْ يُحْسِنُونَ صُنْعاً
[Al-Kahf: 104] And that is because Allah qualified this by His saying:
Faces on that Dayوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ
[Al-Ghashiyah: 2] the Day when the Overwhelming comes, and this does not occur except on the Day of Resurrection.

Therefore: So it is working and exhausted by what it is tasked with, namely dragging chains and shackles, and wading into the Fire of Hell, may Allah protect us and you from it.
