The ruling on one who finds money and is convinced in his mind that it is usurped
What is the ruling for one who finds lost property and it is most likely to him that it was stolen, but he does not know its owner so that he can return it to him?
By what means are you convinced in your mind that it is usurped? The questioner: By circumstances that indicate to him that this money was stolen.

The Shaykh: Is it not possible that its owner sold it? Because there may be indications to you that you know this money belongs to so-and-so, so it is possible that he sold it.
In any case,We answer this: If a person finds lost property and is convinced in his mind that it is usurped, we say: look for its owner, and do not let your conviction be that it is usurped; let your conviction be that it was lost by its owner. But why do you carry the lost property as being usurped? Carry it as being lost by its owner and look for its owner. The important thing, may Allah bless you, is that if you find lost property, you must search for it for a full year. If its owner comes, give it to him; otherwise, it is yours.
