The Ruling on Sending Prayers for the One Who Died with Doctrinal Errors
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Your Eminence! Regarding scholars who fell into some errors in creed; such as the names, the attributes, and others, their names pass by us in the university during our studies, so what is the ruling on sending prayers for them? The Shaykh: Like whom? The questioner: Like: al-Zamakhshari, al-Zarkashi, and others.
The questioner: Al-Zamakhshari and al-Zarkashi.
The Shaykh: Al-Zarkashi in what? The questioner: In the chapter of the names and attributes!
In any case, there are people who affiliate with a specific sect whose slogan is religious innovation; like the Mu'tazilah, for example, and among them is al-Zamakhshari, so al-Zamakhshari is a Mu'tazili,And they describe the affirmers of the attributes as: a Hashawi, one who ascribes a body to Allah, and he misguides them, so he is a Mu'tazili. Therefore, it is obligatory for whoever has read his book al-Kashshaf in the exegesis of the Qur'an to be cautious of his words in the chapter of attributes; but in terms of eloquence and linguistic rhetorical implications, it is good, and much benefit is derived from his book, except that it is dangerous for the person who knows nothing in the chapter of the names and attributes.
But there are scholars who are attested to for goodness, who do not affiliate with a specific sect from the people of innovation; but in their speech there is something of the speech of the people of innovation; like Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani and al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on them both), for some of the ignorant people among the people have criticized them completely and absolutely from every angle,Until it was said to me: that some people say: It is obligatory that Fath al-Bari be burned; because Ibn Hajar is an Ash'ari, and this is not correct.
So these two men specifically, I do not know today that anyone has presented to Islam in the chapter of the hadiths of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) like what they presented, and it indicates to you that Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) by His power and strength—and I do not swear by Allah—has accepted them, as seen in the acceptance of their writings among the people; among the students of knowledge, and even among the common people, for now the book Riyaad al-Saliheen is read in every gathering, and it is read in every mosque, and people benefit from it greatly, and I hope that Allah will make for me a book like this book, that everyone benefits from it in his home and in his mosque.
So how can it be said about these two: That they are innovators who are astray, it is not permissible to send prayers for them, and it is not permissible to read in their books! And it is obligatory to burn Fath al-Bari, and the explanation of Sahih Muslim?! Glory be to Allah! So I say to these people with the language of the situation and the language of speech:
Be less critical of them, may your father have no father from blame, or fill the place they filled
Whoever is able to present to Islam and the Muslims like what these two men presented, except that Allah wills.
So I say: May Allah forgive al-Nawawi, and Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, and whoever was in their likeness from those by whom Allah benefited Islam and the Muslims.
And say "Ameen" to that.
