Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Exegesis of His saying, the Exalted: (So give the disbelievers respite; give them respite for a little while)

Then He, the Exalted, said:
So allow time for the disbelievers. Leave them awhile.فَمَهِّلِ الْكَافِرِينَ أَمْهِلْهُمْ رُوَيْداً
[al-Tariq:17] "Mahhill" and "amhil" have the same meaning,Meaning: wait with a respite,And do not wait with a long respite:
Give them respite for a little while.أَمْهِلْهُمْ رُوَيْداً
[al-Tariq:17] meaning: for a little while, and (ruwaydan) is the diminutive of "rawd" or "irwad,"And what is meant by it: the small amount.
In this verse there is a threat to Quraysh, consolation for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and a promise of victory for him. And the matter turned out as Allah (Mighty and Majestic) had informed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) emigrated from them, and wars occurred between him and them. In the second year of the Hijrah, about twenty-four men from the nobles, leaders, and chiefs of Quraysh were killed; among them was their leader Abu Jahl. And after eight years, or less than eight years, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered Mecca as a conqueror, victorious and triumphant. So much so that he said—as it came in the history—while holding the doorposts of the Ka'bah,And Quraysh was beneath him: (What do you think I will do with you?—for their affair had become in his hand, peace and blessings be upon him—They said: A noble brother! And the son of a noble brother! He said: I say to you what Yusuf said to his brothers:
He said, "No blame will there be upon you today. Allah will forgive you; and He is the most merciful of the merciful."لا تَثْرِيبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْيَوْمَ يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ وَهُوَ أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ
[Yusuf:92] Go, you are the released ones) And he (peace and blessings be upon him) granted them this favor because they became Muslims,And Allah the Exalted said:
Say to those who have disbelieved [that] if they cease, what has previously occurred will be forgiven for them. But if they return [to hostility] - then the precedent of the former [rebellious] peoples has already taken place.
[al-Anfal:38] .
This is the last of what was possible to say regarding Surat al-Tariq. And I urge you to reflect upon the Qur'an and understand its meanings. Take its meanings from the mouths of trusted scholars, or from trusted books of exegesis such as the Tafsir of Ibn Kathir, or the Tafsir of 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Sa'di, and similar exegeses whose authors you know to be trusted in their creed and their opinions.
We ask Allah to make us among those who recite His Book with true recitation, and to benefit us with it, and to make it an intercessor for us on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, He is capable of all things.
And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
