The ruling on a son obeying his father in purchasing cigarettes
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Honorable Shaykh! My father smokes and orders me to buy him tobacco. Should I obey him or not? Please note that he is incapacitated and ill. Please issue a ruling for us. May Allah reward you with good.
Tobacco is forbidden, and the general texts of the Book and the Sunnah indicate that it is forbidden. If it is forbidden and your father orders you to bring it to him, he has ordered you to commit a sin. So, will you obey your father in sin? No.
Do not obey him in sin; for there is no obedience to a created being in disobedience to the Creator,And you say to your father: I advise you against this, but if he promises you that he will try to repent, except that he is unable to repent all at once,And he said: bring me four cigarettes a day: one in the morning with breakfast, one with lunch, one with dinner, and one at bedtime. I promise you that I will reduce it by one each day until I quit. In this case, there is no harm; because he promised you that he would repent, and it is known that one afflicted with smoking—may Allah protect us from that—generally cannot quit all at once. However, if he continues to smoke ten cigarettes every day and persists in that, do not obey him, even if he becomes angry with you, cuts you off, or curses you. It will not harm you, if Allah wills.
