Question:
My father uses cigarettes, and he sends me to buy these cigarettes for him. Is it part of being dutiful to him that I obey him, knowing that he may become angry if I do not buy them for him?
Answer:
Tobacco, in all its types, is forbidden, so it is not permissible to assist in it. Cigarettes are a type of it, so it is not permissible to assist in what Allah has forbidden. Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, only permitted for him the good things and forbade the bad things. He said: : [Al-Ma'idah: 4]. So He, Glorified and Exalted is He, answered: [Al-Ma'idah: 4].
So Allah only made lawful the good things. The knowledgeable doctors have agreed, and others who are knowledgeable about tobacco have agreed, that tobacco is not among the good things, but rather it is among the forbidden bad things. It contains many harms that doctors have pointed out and that those who use it have come to know. Therefore, it is not permissible for a son to assist his father in what Allah has forbidden, whether it is intoxicants, tobacco, unlawful sexual intercourse, gambling, or anything else.
However, you must respond to him with a beautiful response, with kind words and noble character. Say, "My father, may Allah have mercy on you, this harms you. This is not permissible for you. I am not obligated to obey you in other than what is right.Sunan Abi Dawud 2625Sahih (Al-Albani). And I am unable to obey you in this matter. Rather, this is up to you if you do it yourself. This is up to you. I ask Allah to protect you from it and to help you to leave it off, with kind words and a good manner, which may be the cause of guidance, not with violence and harshness.
