Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: (O you who believe, fasting has been made obligatory upon you)]
This is Thursday, the twenty-third of the month of Sha'ban, in the year (1414 AH) , and it is the first session of the spring break. On the occasion of the approaching month of Ramadan, it is fitting that we speak briefly about the saying of Allah the Exalted:
O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous -يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ
[al-Baqarah: 183] This noble verse was introduced by Allah (Mighty and Majestic) with this address:
O you who have believedيَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا
[al-Baqarah: 183] with the description of faith; because the description of faith encourages a person to perform what is commanded and avoid what is prohibited. It is a description—without doubt—praiseworthy and beloved to creation. Every rational person loves to be described as a believer, and every person wishes to perfect his faith. So when Allah the Exalted addresses His servants with this praiseworthy and beloved description, it is more conducive to acceptance. And Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said, as is narrated from him: [When you hear Allah say: (O you who believe) then incline your ear to it; for it is either a good that you are commanded to do, or an evil that you are prohibited from doing.] And what is in our gathering today is a good that we are commanded to do:
O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fastingيَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ
[al-Baqarah: 183] meaning: it is obligatory, and the One who made it obligatory is Allah (Mighty and Majestic), who made it obligatory upon His servants.
And it has come in the Sunnah that it is one of the five pillars of Islam.
