The ruling on a traveler who enters a mosque and finds them praying the night prayer while he has not prayed the sunset prayer
A traveler who has not prayed the sunset prayer entered a mosque and found the people praying the night prayer. What should he do, O Shaykh?
If a person has not prayed the sunset prayer and enters while the people are praying the night prayer, he joins them with the intention of the sunset prayer. If he catches the imam in the first unit, he sits when the imam stands for the fourth unit, recites the testimony, and says the closing salam, then joins the imam in the remainder of the night prayer. If he catches the imam in the second unit, he says the closing salam with the imam, because he has completed three units. If he catches him in the third unit, he performs one unit after the imam’s salam.
Deviating from the norm due to an excuse is permissible. The scholars, may Allah have mercy on them, have explicitly stated this in their books, including: Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy on him, and other scholars. Yes.
