Conditions for Traveling Abroad

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Your Eminence! Some of the young people—may Allah guide them—have been afflicted by traveling abroad with their wives, whether after marriage or during vacations. We ask you to be generous in answering these questions, so that Allah may benefit those who seek good for their families and themselves, and safety from sins and trials: First: If the father or mother knows that if they swore an oath against their son or daughter, or expelled them when they traveled abroad, would it be permissible for them to swear an oath against them or not? And what is your advice to fathers who know that their sons or daughters will travel abroad after marriage but do not prevent them, on the pretext: that the sin of the child is upon him, and that the daughter is the property of her husband, and he is responsible for her after marriage?
It is well known that traveling abroad—and by abroad, I assume you mean the lands of disbelief—the original ruling is prohibition. So it is not permissible except with three conditions: The first condition: that the person has knowledge with which to repel the doubts that are raised there; because there are disbelievers who raise doubts regarding Allah (Mighty and Majestic), regarding the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and regarding the Qur'an. So it is necessary that the person has knowledge with which to repel these doubts.

The second condition: That he has worship that prevents him from desires,Meaning: That he has religion that prevents him from desires;Because the door to desires there is open: Intoxicants, unlawful sexual intercourse, sodomy, everything in which the person is free,And I say: Free according to the present concept, whereas complete freedom is worshipping Allah (Mighty and Majestic); because whoever does not worship Allah worships desire and Satan,And in this, Ibn al-Qayyim says:
They fled from the slavery for which they were created, so they were afflicted with the slavery of the self and Satan
What is the slavery for which we were created? Slavery to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and servitude to Him, and they were afflicted with the slavery of the self and Satan
Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evilإِنَّ النَّفْسَ لَأَمَّارَةٌ بِالسُّوءِ
[Yusuf: 53] and Satan commands you to commit lewdness.

The third condition: The urgent need for travel, such that the person is traveling for a matter he does not find in his country, and the need calls for it.
And everything other than that, the original ruling is prohibition,Rather, we said: The original ruling is prohibition;Because it entails: First: spending a lot of money.

Second: The danger to religion, the danger to creed.

Third: The danger to morals.

Fourth: The danger to customs, for some people pick up these customs and bring them to their country, imitating them, thinking that this is refinement and progress, and similarity in customs leads to similarity in creeds and acts of worship, and for this reason the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: (Whoever imitates a people is one of them).
If that is the case, and this son who has just married wants to travel with his wife in what is called: (the honeymoon!!) and he is feared for him from these dangers, and the father is able to prevent him by swearing an oath against him, let him swear an oath against him and prevent him, and he has the right to do so; because he is responsible for him,Allah the Exalted said:
O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stonesيَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا قُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ وَأَهْلِيكُمْ نَاراً وَقُودُهَا النَّاسُ وَالْحِجَارَةُ
[Al-Tahrim: 6] (and your families) and this is considered part of his family as long as he obeys him in what he says.
But if the need arises and the three conditions I mentioned to you are met, then he may travel with his wife, and he is a trustee over her, and his traveling with her is more preferable in that he protects his private parts, he is safe for his family, and he relieves his family, especially in the beginning of marriage.
