Among the prohibitions of ihram: Perfume.
A person must not apply perfume after entering the state of ihram, whether with incense or oils,The evidence for that is: the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): “Do not wear any garment that has been touched by saffron or weld.” Weld is a plant that resembles saffron in its fragrance.
And his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the man whose mount gored him and he died, which happened on the Day of 'Arafah, so they came to seek the ruling of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on what they should do with him?So he said: “Wash him with water and sidr, and shroud him in his two garments. Do not cover his head and do not apply perfumes to him.” Perfumes are fragrances used to perfume the deceased,Then he said: “For he will be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection while reciting the talbiyah.” Based on this, we say to the person in ihram: It is not permissible for you to apply perfume, neither to your garment nor to your body, once you have entered the state of ihram.
As for incense, if he takes it and applies it to himself, it is forbidden. But if he smells it while it is far from him, there is no harm, just as if he entered a perfumer’s shop and smelled the perfume, he would not be sinful; because what is prohibited is applying perfume, and smelling is not applying perfume.
As for pleasant scents that are not considered perfume, such as the scent of apples or mint and the like, there is no harm in them; because this is not perfume.
